The Format – On Your Porch Lyrics 17 years ago
the first verse of the song is from the father's perspective, the second half is the sons. it's much better once you come to realize he's not talking about being on a girl's porch, but that his father is on his grown-up sons'.

you all should see bergman's "through a glass darkly", since the mentally ill girl tells her husband that a spider raped her and the walls were opening up, while the spider remained a god-like figure.

maybe the pearl has to do with creation, or something like it.
the shine aspect could have to do with worth... maybe like ideals or your own perspective. like, a pearl is worth so much, but it's kind of cloudy in shape.
it's really tough. i'm sure it's capitalized to be a symbol for god or something though.

no offense but i lost interest in reading any of these comments. they dont reside with what i think he was trying to say in this song!

he's finding out this late in the game that he put himself into material, temporary things! e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g is flux.

he said it especially with the gold plated watch, that cant tell time... aka doesn't exactly stand the test of time

i know they're highly religious, but come on guys you dont have to translate every line into a gospel reading.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away Lyrics 18 years ago
he doesnt say much in this song to give a strong impression of a situation.. in watered down terms, this guy finds a girl, puts her on a pedestal, and expects her to do the same. however, she is a cold person, and for this his world comes crashing down when he discovers her fruitless persona.

yeah so besides that acceptable idea i see something deeper penetrating. many poets songwriters etcc... often use "her" or "she" to express scorn.. backstabbers.. principles that make you want to wish you could take back what you thought before and lash out. the singer wants to believe he never believed so much in his pat interpretations of the world.. hes a loner in a sense and comes to the realization that if the world cant take the same approach to understanding their marred perspectives, it will be a long hard road ahead. he feels not only alone for making hope illogical to his future, yet also for being the only one to grasp it

Arcade Fire – (Antichrist Television Blues) Lyrics 18 years ago
the first time i heard this track i instantly thought about the image of an old grey, rusty town where a man lives with his daughter and exploits her.

yeah yeah yeah... i thought it.

now that i'm going back to it though, i see more of an inner conflict being expressed through the daughter. children represent innocence, truth.. blah blah blah.. we all have heard it. in society, this benevolence and purity is disappearing with every new conflicting idea which challenges our morals and humility.
we fight to reach heights that take away beauty in the world. he is trying to convince god that although he has been someone other than who he thought he'd be, he is still there... questioning the path he is going down.
is he the anti-christ?
or is he simply just a demonstration of the type A person society is giving birth to?

maybe he is yearning for a way back to the way.. a simple thought or concept he can relate back to his current standing in this say in age.

for me it doesn't even have to have a message... the melody stands on its own as does his final thought "oh tell me lord, am i the antichrist??" that just sums up everything he was talking about and catches the attention to whoever is listening..
great, great song. maybe one of the best of Arcade Fire.

Mates of State – Beautiful Dreamer Lyrics 18 years ago
im pretty sure the song is talking about problems in society-whether conforming to the norms or making schedules, people tend to miss out on the simple pleasures of spontaneity. we all do it one time or another by getting caught up in the trend of society resulting in complication and ultimate demise. mates understands the importance of needing to really bring it back.
