Okay, I've listened to this song about 2000 times and have studied every bit of it. Here is my interpretation of the song. I woke up in a dream today, (A man awakens from a dream) To the cold and the static, (Possibly means he fell asleep listening to the radio in order to calm himself and left it on while the channel dies and reduces to cold static) And put my cold feet on the floor, (He wakes up and immediately wants to get out of bed. He is probably frightened or angry at what he had seen in the dream) Forgot all about yesterday, (Something happened the day before that may have caused him to feel upset and he's forgotten what it was and is now frustrated) Remembering I'm pretending to be where I'm not anymore, (I imagine that the whole song is speaking to a girl. In this line the man could be saying that he is pretending to be something else only to impress the girl and be what she wants him to be for the sake of their relationship) A little taste of hypocrisy, (Perhaps the girl is forcing him to be what she wants him to be, even though the girl herself isn't what he really wants. I actually don't know exactly what hypocrisy is, but I've heard it used in this way before) And I'm left in the wake of the mistake, slow to react, (Obviously, if he is going out with a girl who is forcing him to change his life just so she is happy, he has made a mistake and this small fact is slowly coming to him and he is now realizing this) Even though you're so close to me you're still so distant, (The girl is his girlfriend so they must be pretty close, yet the girl only likes him because he is acting like someone else, therefore she is not close to him, but only for that matter) And I can't bring you back, (There's really no way to have the girl like him for who he is. If he continues acting like someone else, sure she will still go out with him, but she wont technically be going out with HIM) It's true, the way I feel was promised by your face, (I actually don't know what he means by this. Maybe the reason he is acting this way is because he thinks the girl is pretty and he wants to do anything he can to make her like him even if he doesn't necessarily like her) The sound of your voice painted on my memories, (Often times when somebody likes another person they think of them a lot. I think this line is pretty obvious. He can't stop thinking about her) Even if you're not with me, I'm with you, (Again, the girl is going out with him, but only because he is acting like someone else. He is in love "With [her]" but she is not actually in love with him) You, now I see, keeping everything inside, (She obviously knows what she's doing to him but she doesn't want him to stop acting like someone else so she is keeping it inside, hoping that she is fooling him) With you, You, now I see, even when I close my eyes, (He tries not to think about her, apparently because it is upsetting him, but whenever he closes his eyes she's right there) With you, You, now I see, keeping everything inside, With you, You, now I see, even when I close my eyes, I hit you and you hit me back, (The girl is so high on authority she acts as if she can't possibly have anyone with more power than her. That, or if he tries to tell her that she's upsetting him she only insults him and bosses me around) We fall to the floor the rest of the day stands still, (Hm... Maybe he is reminiscing the good days when he wasn't aware that she was handling him. I didn't think to much about this line) Fine line between this and that, (Not much is different from the past, only that he is now aware of what she is doing) But when things go wrong I pretend that the past isn't real, (Maybe he tries to give second chances so whenever she slips up he just tries to pretend it never happened) I'm trapped in this memory, (Obviously you can never completely forget anything so even though he tries not to remember any of the bad things his girlfriend does, he always ends up thinking about them anyways) And I'm left in the wake of the mistake, slow to react, (Same thing as before only he is standing there thinking about all of the things his girlfriend has done and how mistaken he was to trust her, I guess) Even though you're close to me, You're still so distant, And I can't bring you back, (Again, all same as before) No, I won't let you control my fate, (The girl is pretty much making him act the way he is and she will eventually plan out his whole life and make him act it out like a little puppet show) While I'm holding the weight of the world on my conscience, (Probably, being a caring boyfriend (?), he tries his best to help his girlfriend in any way and usually people who do that end up taking the other's problems and adding them to their own (I myself have done this way too many times before)) No, I won't just sit here and wait, While you wear your options, You're making a fool of me, (The man is probably trying his best to act the way she wants him to act, however, this not being the way he would normally act, he isn't doing a great job at it and is probably acting like a poser or something and making a fool of himself) No, you didn't dare try to say, That you don't care and solemnly swear, Not to follow me there, (...Huh. I dunno.) No, it ain't like me to beg on my knees, Oh, please, oh, baby, please, That's not how I'm doing things, (He doesn't like the way she's making him act, so he is begging her to just love the way he does things, not the way she is making him do things) No, I'm not upset, No, I'm not angry, (...Oh. Kinda ruined my whole interpretation right there. I dunno) I know love is love, But love, sometimes it pains me, (LOVE HURTS) With or without you, I'll always be with you, (He still loves her, even though she's a brat. Maybe he feels like she is haunting him, like even though she isn't there, she is. I guess) You'll never forget me, (I dunno. Some parts of thi song are a little confusing) I'm keeping you with me, No, I won't let you take me to the end, Of my rope, while you burden (It's burden, guys. Trust me) and torture my soul, (This line is pretty clear, too) No, I'm not your puppet, (The way the girl is controlling him makes him feel like she is using him as a puppet) And, no, no, no, I won't let you go, (He is in love with her. No matter what. It happened to me and is still somewhat in effect) No, no matter how far we've come, I can't wait to see tomorrow, No matter how far we've come I, I can't wait to see tomorrow, (I don't know about this part...) So there you have it. I've spent a LOT of time studying this song. Why? This song basically sums up my old relationship with my ex-girlfriend. I listen to this song and sometimes believe it is speaking directly to her. She's become kind of a brat though. She wont talk to me or even be seen with me. She's broken up with me twice and her only excuse is that she's not ready for a boyfriend yet (although she has, like, four at the moment. Slut.) |
