i don't know what the specifics of the lyrics are supposed to be about, oral sex i heard a long time ago and that sort of makes sense. but emotionally it seems to be about emotional isolation, with the singer feeling hated by other people for his lack of ability to relate to them emotionally. he doesn't have the same set of emotions as other people, but he can't lie about it either. so obviously this has led him to some act of asshole-ism, like infidelity, and he's is feeling accused for it, and admitting to it, but trying to explain that he is incapable of being otherwise - i didn't feel a thing, that's the truth. and he knows that makes him an asshole - 'anything you say you know you're guilty'. he knows people hate him because he is an asshole but he feels like he can't help it. look at the video clip, the way he is cut off from the audience, and how he is even acting like an asshole to his band members. and then kind of mocking himself by pulling faces at the audience. the last second shows thhis really lonely look on his face.
for the record i have heard mike patton say that he doesn't put much thought into his lyrics and chooses the words as much based on how they sound as anything else. i think this comes straight out of the subconscious. |

I think the song is about women's self-betrayal, the denial of their wild nature. The rooster crows seems to refer to the gospel story of Peter denying knowing Jesus three times before the cock crows (matches in with slight gospel-ly feel of the chorus). by living the civilised veneer of drinking coffee and tea and living false relationships where she pretends to be compliant and sweet, women who are truly wild and fierce at heart betray themselves - but the wildness comes out - stabbing the man in the back. |

I think it's about the wild nature in women - however she looks and acts in the civilised world - drinking coffee and tea and in relationship with various men - she's still wild underneath |

In this song the moon she's singing about is her own emotional nature - herself - in relationships and how she finds relationships hard but needs them. In astrology the moon is the feminine emotional side of a person. She's saying that her emotional nature is changeable and sometimes pulls away from relationships and she wants to leave 'my care my coat leave on a high note'. See Leslie Feist is an Aquarian and Aquarians are really independent people and find it a bit hard to be emotionally intimate in relationships! Sometimes her emotions are out of whack 'song's out of key' and she things they are too exposed 'heart on my sleeve not where it should be' That's why she says 'take it slow and take it easy on me' - her emotions are like the moon, she needs the light and warmth of love - and that's what she means by 'shed some light on me please!'
That's what it means to me! |
