I first heard this song last week. It was late and I was tired after a long night of pub crawling (NPI). As usual, Tom Petty's sound just spoke to my soul. His music is just so soothing and melancholy; it hits a spot that few others do (Neil Young, for one).
The lyrics remind me of my ex and I, who can't seem to stay away from each other. Even after 7 years, one of us always ends up reaching out to the other one. He shows up at my door and everything just feels right again for us. He has this effect on me that I can't put my finger on, kind of like Petty's music.
Mmm, this song just reminds me of being lonely on the road on a late night, with someone on your mind. |

this is why I love Amy. she understands what it means to have a broken heart; she really gets it. this song perfectly captures that haunting feeling of someone's presence in your mind all the time, even or especially while you sleep, and then that harsh reality in the morning when they're not there. the morning is a tough time during breakups for me; everyday as soon as I wake up I have to remember that we're not together anymore.
this song also nails the concept of that time of day when everything changes. you can handle the daytime by keeping busy but night is a different story. lows are lower and you just miss him so much. hits close to home for me. |

nah, I agree with you Deathsdoor. It may be catchy but the lyrics are god awful and it just sounds very "early". in a bad way, like before Townshend had song writing experience. I love when he tries to be biting: "at least I'll get my washing done". ooh, showed her! |
