Green Day – Blood, Sex and Booze Lyrics 18 years ago
Here, I think is how you gotta look at songs like this: yes, it's about S&M. That's obviously the topic. Now, you can either see how the song applies broadly to other topics, or you can see how Green Day uses their lyrics to make it all a funny, clever commentary on S&M. (I listened to this song countless times before I caught what it was about, btw; with Billie Joe's voice you can do that sometimes.)

So at the beginning, then, we got this little audio clip of a dominatrix whipping a guy. Then we launch into the song, which has some interesting subtexts: as some have pointed out, the speaker is a little conflicted about his love of bondage; he's "in distress." And, if you think about it, this is kind of related to the idea of masochism in the first place. "Say I'm disturbed / it's what I deserve"- he's got some low self-worth, thinks he's shit, thinks he needs punishment. But "please don't make me beg"- he's telling the Mistress that he WANTS this punishment, so she doesn't need to force it on him. The funny thing about masochism: wanting somebody to force something onto you.

"Thank you, sir," is a reference to "Animal House" ("Thank you, sir, may I have another"- Kevin Bacon), and I love that "mandolin of discipline" line. Whips, handcuffs, man-eating dogs, and getting beaten with a mandolin- God, that's arousing.

The Dresden Dolls – Lonesome Organist Rapes Page Turner Lyrics 18 years ago
Manic, funny, wordplay- everything we've come to expect from the Dolls.

The meaning here is pretty clear: the "Lonesome Organist," the piano teacher, day by day seduced his "Page Turner" student and eventually had sex with her ("find out why this damn thing won't stop bleeding").

The piano teacher's an interesting character. He's pretty sadistic ("it's funny when you're frightened") but he also flatters her nonstop so she'll put up with his "heavy petting," etc. All this, of course, is intertwined with her progress as a piano player, which is minimal because her teacher's so focused on her body he doesn't have time to teach her!

And, in the end, she just keeps it all quiet, "turn[ing] pages faithfully" for years afterward. I love this song. Who but the Dresden Dolls can make pedophilia fun?
