loved how they used the song in the movie "adventureland" - the whole soundtrack is awesome, but when the protagonist in the end finally leaves his hometown to start his new, own life in nyc, and you see this amazing city and its lights through the rain-stained windows of the bus he's riding on, it really gave me shivers |

this is one of the very few songs that I like because of its music and not because of its lyrics. the form dominates the content, if you will. which is not usually my way of doing and seeing things, but i think the lyrics are quite clear in this song and also not that impressive concerning their imaginative power, so i concentrated on the music, which is great and light and always a pleasure to listen to. |

there should be something like a nobelprize for "wisest phrase" or so, because frou frou would totally deserve it. I mean, has there ever been so much summed up in six words as it is in "there is beauty in the breakdown"? those six words can be everything, a consolation, a parole for a revolution, a personal philosophy... and they make me cry everytime I hear them. this song fits perfectly with the end of "garden state" - which was, by the way, an amazing movie with an at least equally amazing soundtrack and a great ending to. this is something that can't be repeated often enough. because, as hollywood-like as it may seem, this is the one and only end that fits the film. plus, it isn't illogical, which is also a very common phrase in this context. but there are movie-platforms to discuss that. |

this song could be the nonstop-playing-soundtrack of my emotional life. totally. has everything in it: regretting the easy days of childhood, being afraid of what there may come, feeling wrong in the place where you are, loneliness, resigning when realizing that there is indeed nothing going to change, and even if so, then only for the worse. |

reading all those comments on this song, i was just about to write almost exactly what you, previous poster, had written. really amazing how alike the feelings of totally strangers can be...
great song, though. and although the lyrics often depress me, the sunny melody always cheers me up - which happens often with songs by the shins. especially with new slang. the lyrics are depressing as hell, but I still get a warm feeling when listening to it. |

prometheus was one of the titans. and they were defeated during the battle for the olymp. but as prometheus had dared to bring men the fire before, zeus ordered hephaistos to chain him on the caucasus. and every day an eagle should come and eat a bit of prometheus' liver, but as he is a titan, this bit of liver would always return afterwards and his tortures would go on forever... i think the reference is pretty clear. |

has anyone noticed so far how perfectly the last line fits with the whole movie "hotel chevalier"? I'm referring to the scene, where jack and his ex-gf talk about the bruises on her legs - and, between the lines, of course, about the bruises and scars in their souls... just a great song. by the way, i love paris and this song always reminds me of it... |

| Francis Dunnery – Good Life Lyrics

it's not only about the relationship being over, it's merely about him realizing that they are happy on the one hand, but on the other they won't be for ever, because they are too different or whatsoever. so he leaves her, being completely unselfish, because he really does love her and wishes her the good life she deserves. at first, she's desperate because of his decision, so he tries to calm her down. and she makes it, she finds somebody and gets happy. and at this point, as he is only human, the selfish thoughts come back and he regrets to have lost her. but he doesn't regret his decision to leave her, i think. if anything, he regrets his decision to start the relationship in the first place. |

i dont care about any hidden meanings or personal experiences that are expressed in this song - the only thing i know is that i love it for one single and simple reason: it ALWAYS makes me cry. and yes, it is the words that move me, but even more the music. you know, just after the words "hey... i got nothing to do today but smile..." i feel the tears in my eyes, get caught in the rythm of the starting drums and start to cry like a baby when i hear this wonderful "hald of the time we're gone and we don't know where" line... ok, I admit, I'm a bit frustrated, and yes, I like natalie portman and the role she played in garden state, and another yes, I always compare larges situation to mine and wish that my life would do a u-turn just like his does in the movie - but nevertheless, it's a great song. i suppose it would please me even if I didn't know garden state. |

i heard this song the first time when garden state came out - but I didnt hear it in the movie, actually i thought a movie by the scrubs star could not be that good (3 years after I am a huge fan of scrubs AND garden state...). a friend, who means very much to me, but only on some kind of intellectual level, told me to listen to it: "gonna like it. sweet, and sad, and beautiful..." and it was. i fell in love with this song, totally. when I firstly saw garden state, I realized that what sam says to large: "gotta hear this one song, it'll change your life, i swear" is perfectly true. i won't ever be able to hear this song not thinking about my life and how it has to change and how i'm supposed to get out of this fucking, small-brained, old-fashioned, catholic town that vienna is.... |

this song IS about the monotony of life. I mean, why should zach braff decide to use this song in his movie in this particular situation, if he wasn't sure he came about the right interpretation? anyway, this song is awesome. and I can relate so much to it, cause i just did my matura (something like the a grades, i am from austria) and it's as if my life would brake to pieces around me - i don't see my friends anymore, can't motivate myself to do anything in the evening or so... think I'm breeding a depression and should go to a psychotherapy or whatever, but - knowing that such feelings can be put into words and music like THIS is a bit of a relief. plus, the garden state scene itself is like a mirror image of myself being in a similar party-situation... the way he looks around, grinning at some time, grabbing his knees with his hands and the whole "what the fuck am i doing here"-behaviour... could be me. |
