Cary Brothers – Forget about you Lyrics 18 years ago
He lays awake, unable to sleep. The pain inside of him has gone numb, though he still goes over and over it in his mind, drawing out the pain worse and worse as he "scratches at his wounds". Their long-time conflict--she feels restricted by her relationship with him, like she can't go out and be a part of "the scene". I feel like this is a result of the long-distance relationship, particularly because it talks about "all the life [they] had" and they "were the unseen", which implies that no one else fully understood the depth and breadth of their probably very private relationship.

Tracy Chapman – Never Yours Lyrics 18 years ago
This is how I like to imagine the story.

A well-bred woman fell in love young with someone who was considered inappropriate for her. She gave herself to her love, but her family pushes her into courtship with another suitor, pressured by his greater wealth. He traps her by putting financial pressure on her family by gambling with her male relatives in what he knows is for them a losing game.

I really like the idea of a suitor who's been in love with her from the start, but who doesn't know how to convince her to love him back and in return is forced to pressure her into a forced hand. He keeps himself detached as he pursues her, her lack of interest making him cold and bitter.

And then when she's finally "all his", after all he's done to try to force her to be his, she hates him. He's alienated himself through his treatment of her. Whether in the future he shows her tenderness or the same, bitter brutality as before, she's lost to him forever.

Rilo Kiley – Silver Lining Lyrics 18 years ago
I actually don't interpret this song the same way. All things aside besides the lyrics, I really feel like even though the person leaves at the start, to learn how to live for herself, she comes back afterwards once she's become independent. I think this because of the way it shifts from "I was your silver lining" to "I'm your silver lining" later in the song.

Ray LaMontagne – Lesson Learned Lyrics 18 years ago
Well, here's my take, after listening to this song on repeat for three months and crying myself to sleep over it. This is not a self-projection, but I had a lot of time to mull over it.

I think that it's a combination of everything that's been said so far, and then a little more. When he is still innocent, she accuses him of cheating on her, becomes clingy and paranoid--frankly, unbearable. He responds with resentment and vindictiveness, angry and feeling stifled. He falls out with her forever and, in the process, allows himself to become interested in someone else.

When he leaves her, she's shocked, and feels betrayed because he does have someone with whom he's interested.

But he's lost all the love he'll ever have for her, and frankly he just doesn't care any more. His resentment has swallowed him whole.

Dolly Parton – Jolene Lyrics 18 years ago
I hate this song. My boyfriend's ex-girlfriend forced us to listen to it for hours in the car, claiming it was her "favorite". It's pretty typical of her to do subversive, cruel things that go unnoticed to everyone else, but I can't help but wonder whether she was implying that she was the beautiful "Jolene" or if I was the villainous slut who stole her love, after him having left her for a month.
