I was reading the first verse again and I remembered that in the bible, when Peter walks out to Jesus on water in the middle of the storm, hence "I was floating in a peaceful sea / Rescued by a sinking ship". Also, I think of the description of Jesus in the bible, and how awesome and fearsome He is, and that maybe Aaron feels guilty : "My forehead no longer sweet / With holy kisses worthy of your fiery lips". Maybe he feels guilty about something that happened in the past, that maybe he did something or something happened for him to feel guilty: "January 1979, saw a terrible crash / And it couldn�t help but laugh / My ear pressed against the past / Like a glass on a wall of a hospital photograph" But that's just my interpretation of only the first verse. I really love this song. Its the best on the album. There are probably many ways this can be translated, but this is what I got because it feels like my situation put into a song. Basically, these two people were really in love but as they got to know each other, they realized it wasn't what they thought, and they started to lie and decieve each other. But they really loved what they thought they had and won't let go, even though its "killing" them. He gave her everything but he knows it was all for nothing, now he's asking her to leave and he's going to end the relationship. If you want to know more in-depth : "All that you say is complimentary Within these walls, where lies are on display If you hide the truth, then rest assured, there's nothing left to say there's nothing left to do" ---- This couple are lying to each other and they both know it but won't say anything or do anything because there's nothing to do or say. "The difference between finding what you love, and loving what you've found Is killing us right now It will always be true, living as one, beats dying as two We both know this can't go on" ---- They both were in love at the beginning, but as they got to know each other more, they realized it was just an illusion, that they aren't meant to be or are really in love anymore. Its "killing" them, and he knows that if they stay together, they'll both end up heartbroken and hurt, but if he ends it and goes on his own, it'll be easier than going through the pain of staying with her. "Crawl back in place I promise not to chase I guess this time I loved what I could taste What the years have lost, is what I've gained There's nothing left to give after everything I gave" ---- He's asking her to leave, that he wants it to end. He realizes that what he loved was just a "taste" of something that wasn't real. He gave her everything, years of his life, his love, his faith, but he hasn't gained anything from it. "Crawl back in place I'm trying not to hate I guess this time I'll watch you fade away" ---- He's asking her to leave, that he doesn't want to and is trying not to hate her. He's just going to end this for the good and watch her "fade away". |

So the lyrics are pretty confusing but I've looked in several places and put things together and listened to the song like a million times ;) and this is what I got: Oh... She's standing by a broken tree. Her hands are all twisted; She's pointing at me. I was damned by the light coming over as she spoke with a voice that disrupted the sky. And she said, "Walk on over, Darling, to a bit of shade. I will wrap you in my open arms." She said, "Let me sign. Let me sign." I'm not entirely sure if he says "Darling" or not. But its an amazing song. I was so surprised this is what he sounded like. Its beautiful. And I kind of relate in a way. But it matches directly with Bella&Edward. I love Twilight and its perfect =) I just wish it was longer! As for the meaning, I've looked at the other comments and agree with many of the things said. Hope these lyrics help! =) |

I read the article Silver Chair_Fanatic put in their comment. The songs tugs on my heart a little when I listen to it. After reading the article, it makes sense that the song had a bitter tone in it. Nonetheless, I love it. Amazing. Kimya Dawson is a genius. She's one of those rare artists people will take for granted. |

When I was younger, my mom used to place Tracy Chapman and when I first heard this song, I was so unbelievably sad. Its probably one of the first songs that got me thinking about deeper meaning in songs. From then on, its been music music music. I love it. This song makes me cry. I've seen abusive marriages. It's awful. Tracy Chapman was right when she said "It won't do no good to call the police. Always coming late, if they come at all." The song is beautiful. I've thought about it being about God, also, but I don't see it like that at all. To me, the singer is talking about how they love their best friend and how they have always been there for her. She wants to be with that person forever. The line "a 1000 broken hearts carried about 1000 broken wings' makes me think her best friend carries her even when he is broken, too, and vice versa. Thats just my opinion. Its such a beautiful song. It means a lot to me because it seems to speak the words of my heart, i guess. |

i dont think it has to anything with God to me, its about her breaking up or divoring someone and she hears that he's in love again- "rumours have started that you are in love again. rumours that are completely unsubstantiated" and she doesn't want to accept that the person she loves is gone and that he doesnt want to love her anymore. its like he's wrecking her life- "we dont believe in you and your wrecking crew" and at one point she's trying to show him that they love each other- "cant you see all this love?" and, in one line, she sounds angry, forceful, like she wont give up to show him they should be together thats what i think |
