Pearl Jam – Given to Fly Lyrics 14 years ago
He got up outta there ran for hundreds of miles.
He made it to the ocean...
A wave came crashing like a fist to the jaw.
Deliver him wings, "Hey look at me now!"
Arms wide open with the sea as his floor.
Oh, power, oh. He's flying whole. High, wide, oh.

This section of the song is about surfing.

U2 – Love Rescue Me Lyrics 18 years ago
Like the prodigal son, the lyric confesses lost faith in "I have cursed thy rod and staff, they no longer comfort me" referring to Psalm 23. It's common for young Christians to grow up, lose their way, and return to faith later in life. I believe this is true of this writer. Jesus speaks to this in the gospel.

But the writer also abandons his "name". Like the prodigal son, he's turned his back on his family. Times are tough.

Without faith and family, the writer is on his own and turns to "love". He places his hope in the love in his heart and sets his sights to a "new world".

The guy is heading into the wild with only his wits. Tough times.

Great lyric that many can relate to on some level.

Pearl Jam – Black Lyrics 18 years ago
It's been 16 years since I first heard this song yet I still cry. I've never reacted so strongly to song. Nothing comes close. The lyric, singing and guitar play blend together in remarkable way. At the song's end, Eddie shrieks "why?". I've always thought he was looking up at the sky and asking this of God.

If rock was meant to change the world, this song is proof that it does. This song has left its mark on me.

U2 – Bad Lyrics 18 years ago
While Bono may have been inspired by a friend's heroin addition, he went out of his way to avoid details, instead touching on very general themes. Bono often introduces biblical themes into his songs. My interpritation of this lyric is that it is a Psalm-like prayer to God, the God who sent his son Jesus to atone for our human flaws, the God who places the Holy Spirit into the hearts of believers. Bono seems to be acknowledging his sin, wishing that he could free the Holy Spirit from his "heart of clay" and ultimately willingly let go of the 'bad'ness in his heart -- the desolation, isolation, temptation. I believe Bono wishes that the separation between God and man no longer existed. He wants to "let it go", perhaps upon viewing the suffering of his addicted friend. Nevertheless, Bono is so moved by his friend's suffering that he is concerned for all man, wishing that we could "surrender" and "dislocate" from our frailties/weakness.

If this in fact a prayer to God, it's a very bold one. Like King David of the Old Testement (and of Psalms), Bono would be revealing an overwhelming love for God's people and God himself.
