This is their own way of sending their message that drugs arent the way.the monkey refers to the drugs, dragging you down whever, and you jsut keep feeding it but it wont go away, and it stops you from moving forward."when all your friends are dying" shows that the effects of teh drugs is killing off your friendships, destroying your life. As musicians, they need to appeal to their audience, so the age old"jsut say no" line wont work on the kids who listen to them, so they have to be more harsh"feedin that fuckin monkey on my back" |

Sure it could be based on religious guidance, but to be fair, you're drawing the tiniest links and when you think about it, you're jsut trying to force your opinion on other by any means possible. to me this song is all about an undying friendship. written for mike portnoy by john petrucci, this isnt a love song, theyre both married, to chicks from the same band, but its an ulktimate expression fo friendship, expecially as portnoy performs this, its special in teh sense that he is a part of this expression, and so theire friendship is alwasy shown as linking them together. |
