In Christian terms, one is "right" when he is acceptable to God. We need to get right with God because of the great chasm between divine and mortal, between holy and sinner. At first the person is pictured as struggling within himself. "Broken bones and thickest pine" here are symbols for the sins within. Until he finds his way to where Jesus is--"your wooden stairs". He knows that only Jesus can repair him. Remember that Jesus was a carpenter here on earth. The person realizes his sins ("fallen"), that he once loved these sins, and how he struggles because of these--"rain falls hard", "battles", "devours", "cuddles". The currency means the price to pay for this, that is, the life and blood of Christ. The things God needs are asking for forgiveness for these sins and asking Him to be personal Lord and Savior. These are the things that gets him right with God. "Cut your hair" pictures God's humanity. "To meet his Maker clean" means he becomes acceptable to God, he is drained from the taints of sins! All the while, he is struggling to believe, doubting, has disbelief; but God only needs enough faith from us to call to Him, just as the person here did, already God convinces us that we are right. |
