the song wasn't written for this movie. It was already written for the frames' album: the cost. glen hansard is one founding member of that great irish band. they have another album too, which is also nice.
At a frames' concert Glen said that this song is about your own girlfriend. Seeing a girl (your girlfriend) across the room, and seeing how beautiful she is, and realizing that it is actually your girlfriend. Also b/c of seeing how beautiful she is, also you realize how lucky you are...

This song has a deep meaning for me. For me it's about love and letting go of the love that you don't see what the outcome will be; thus the lines "Sometimes I want a taste but then I don't know what I'm saying".
So, you choose for a love (the new person that loves you and you spend time with currently) which you don't love yet, because you still have feelings for the other one. But you know that the new love "loves you" for sure, and is sweet, and gives you the comfortable feeling, the "deeper peace"...Therefore you choose for her, knowing that at the end you'll love her and you'll be at peace after all.
It's something like that for me. I just can't stop listening to this song! |

omg omg omg. this song is like they are talking to my ex girlfriend. we broke up due to long distance, etc, but we remained with the affection we had for each other, and we hope (maybe hoped, i don't know myself anymore) to meet this year again to see what's up, and maybe wait till both of us are at one place......but in the meanwhile, I've met a girl named Elizabeth :P. First time I'm hearing this song, and it's so freaking strange. Like they are talking to my ex-gf, which I miss :( (have to say not as much as before, b/c of Elizabeth) |

i agree with dirty_aj_kid_09. This song can be as well about a girl saying sorry to a dude. In my case, I relate it to that. Things the girl said, and how she acted. Told me she would prefer to be on her own for now, as she's living far from me, and I'm too sweet to only think of her, that i should move on (which I couldn't do cuzz i loved this girl so much)...Now that I'm moving on, she realized, and after a long time without me talkiing to her, she decided to come into contact with me, and basically I was feeling she kinds of regrets of telling me to move on, and forget about the possibilities of ever being together again....This song started to play from my music library (after long time of hearing it), and I felt like she really wanted to say sorry for giving me a heart-break, and that she still wants to try it. Only problem with me, is I became this cold-heart dude now. It's a pity, but it's just my defensive shield now. |

maybe it's about a relationship that already ended, and he's just kinda talking to himself in his sadness. Thus, you know when you still love someone, and you are not anymore with her, and you kinda talk to yourself, like, please please, let me be free from you so i can move on. I hope you guys can understand what I mean. It's the phase, where you can't move on, because the only thing in your mind is the girl, and you're kinda trying to be free from her to really move on with your life, and probably to be able to love again someday. |

i don't think the acoustic version was better. It was different, and also great, but it's totally different than the original version. Both are great.
About the song, I think it's about restarting your state of mind after a relationship (or something other than a relationship) that made you afraid of living, loving, giving further. Thus, you thought everything was alright and then all of sudden you're hurt and afraid of moving on, but with this song it gives the meaning that you are starting to coming out again and starting to see life again, start to live again, start to love again, start to give again, because you are now able of leaving behind what kept you down.
If we're talking about a relationship, it could be even that you're willing to give it a try again in your new state of mind.

I am in this stage now. So I think it's really about a girl that doesn't know what she wants, so she parts away to think about herself, and it just kills me that she's not feeling the same way as i feel for her.
I'm just scared that when she finally realized that she prefers to be with me, that I will turn my face and say goodbye, even though i know deep in my heart that I want her so bad. I'm just scared that my pride will play a role. Thus that shields me of getting hurt again.

This song is so great. Lots of nice melody in it. How the guitar is played, how the strings come in in the second verse. Just close your eyes, and you feel you're lifting up from the ground and going to the place where Travis is talking about. In other words, if you have experienced something like this, it's just a right on the head hit to you.
For me it's just that the guy is freaking heart-broken that he can't think of another person than "you", who he thinks is the only one who's able to save him and make him happy again by loving him and being with him again. |

when you are closer, it's better than when you are far away from each other. I know that for a fact, because my this girl that is my one and only, the one that made me fall in love again after 2 years is far away from me now, and it's just difficult. When we were together in our birthplace, we were an amazing couple, and freaking happy. Everyone could have seen that from us, but we had to leave, because I needed to come and finish up some stuff and she had to go as well for her future, and it's just difficult that we're far from each other that you get depressed, and you don't think straight. I know I'll be with her again, because my thoughts about her are so strong that it's gotta happen again. This song really describes what I went through. You know when you meet someone and it looks like it's destined to happened? that you came across each other for a reason? Like your paths crossed each other - basically it looks like she/he is your soulmate that was so hard to find, and you finally find her/him, but for one or no reason you don't end up together, but the energy you feel for each other is still there.
In my case, i met this girl for 8 months. and when we decided to try it, it didn't go like we had hoped, but we still tried, and sometimes it looked like heaven, but then it falls again to hell. After all you say goodbye. I still feel that she's my soulmate, because for the first time in my life i feel such an energy in me that's kinda unknown. I still think there is something between us, but maybe it's not the right moment (or perhaps I'm not the right one)...so this song hits me directly in my heart....The thing that strucked me was that I was always a daft punk fan, the only thing is that I never listen to lyrics, because i like beats, but as soon as i went through this experience, this song started playing in the car, and i'd listened to the lyrics, and it was sooo true..damn...i'll miss her for sure |
