| The Smiths – That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore Lyrics | 18 years ago |

The verse that you are all confused about... It was dark as I drove the point home and on cold leather seats well, it suddenly struck me I just might die with a smile on my face after all He comes to the realization that actually being alone, on his own isn't that bad. The leather seats represent a desire most have (Companionship in this case) and his description of them being cold is his discovery that it (a relationship) isn't all it is cracked up to be. He is happier on his own..and actually the true loneliness was him in the relationship... |

This is a song about getting out of a relationship before it is too late or at least questioning it. Leaving before you become someone you don't want to be or you're put in a situation you can't escape. Shannon's 1st car, that he drove even after he made it big, was his Galaxie. A simple, basic piece of crap...that not many people would love, but he did. And that car was a representation of him and who he was comfortable being...even if people around him weren't happy with that The reference to the Cadillac is that of a decent lifestyle. It is a symbol of status and respectibility and everything he wasn't comfortable being. But with all that said...throughout the song he def seems to struggle with just walking away..he keeps second guessing himself and which honestly makes sense, because with all of our first loves isnt it hard for us to just give up on and move on... |
