This is a song about relationships - whether it'd be your relationship with a family member/friend/God/or a significant other is up to your interpretation. It's about a girl who has built "walls" or barriers in her heart for the soul purpose of protecting herself. When people get hurt by others or by past relationships, they don't know any other way to prevent themselves from hurting again - so they are guarded. Windows represent an opening to the soul - but this person has tried very hard to cover up what's going on in the inside of her. However, because she doesn't know any other way how to trust or open up, she's crying out for that "someone" to break through that. She wants to love again, she wants to trust again - she doesn't want to be confined into her hurts, but again, she doesn't know any other way to break through and she's hoping that that "someone" will be the one that she can love again and trust again. The letters and the paintings symbolize the desire to express how she feels and all her feelings, but because she's confined to her walls, she can't open up to this person. When people want to express their "inner" feelings, they write in a journal and/or paint - so it's just a metaphor describing her desire to want to express that love or trust. The lines that keep you, the lines that sweep you - they symbolize "borders" and boundaries on how far she'll go in that relationship or trust. Locking the doors from the inside is an indication that it's her choice and she's confined herself in this place where she feels she's unreachable. The person cares for this girl, whoever that person is. He know that there's something in there and there's a glimmer of hope that this person is the one who will help her open up. She's like "Uhm, should I trust? Should I?" That's why she says at the end, "These walls mean everything to me!" Meaning that if she leaves the walls behind, she's vulnerable to hurt again - a place she's unwilling to go to again - and that scares her to know that. |

It's so easy to decipher the lyrics - finding meaning to songs are like putting together a puzzle piece: It's about a guy who is going through stuff in his life personally - you can tell because he mentions about the storms (these storms aren't going on necessarily in his relationship with his girl). He's just not wanting to deal with eveyrthing, but he feels that he can look to his wife/girlfriend for comfort and support (Keep the lights down low, house warm) all symbolize comfort and rest. He's concerned though that all his circumstances will eventually affect his relationship - he does have hope though that even though everything else in his life is falling a part, his relationship with his wife/girlfriend will be strong because she's been such an important part in his life in regards to the support she gives. And if her support goes - than goes everything else. If he gets' swept out to sea, means that whatever happens, as long as she's there with him, he'll be happy. =) That's self explanatory. Basically in a nutshell, this dude is going through a lot, but he's glad that he has a girlfriend/wife who supports him and understands him through it all - and he's confident (which is a Godly thing ;-) that they'll make it through! ;-) |
