i really don't see how this could NOT be about a death. it's not just the obvious references... everything in the song points to that.
your opinion isn't accurate because of your situation; if anything, your situation makes you biased on what you think the song is about. |

last friday my friend asked jason mraz why he changed the song title. he was very nice about it, but quite caught off guard. basically, he said he thought that's what the song really meant to him.
translation: he didn't understand the song one bit. |

| Cursive – The Night I Lost the Will to Fight Lyrics

this song also makes evident the theme of the fucked up relationship/marriage/whatever as a circle. both by repeating the line "the night has fallen up the staircase" and by playing the same harmonics at the end as in "the casualty"... i'm not sure if i made myself clear there... listen to the album all the way through and start again... theres the casualty, the martyr, the relationship fails, and then they lose the will to fight and it all starts over again.
kasher's a genius. |

yeah, i don't think tim is completely innocent in the failure of his marriage. granted, i think she fucked it up COMPLETELY, somehow, possibly infidelity?... either way, she certainly fucked him up completely. but i think he had something to do with it. alcohol was involved somehow. ...i think he blames her a lot, but also himself. he realizes he's to blame as well, which is fucking amazing. the fact that he writes from both sides... though he's "speaking for her", it's still amazing. |

friendsforfebruary, you are joking, right?
tim kasher is the martyr. most of this song is sung thru kasher's wife. (er, actually, thru the "wife" character, not technically kasher's wife, but i think we all know better than to not think this is autobiographical... see the video for this song on The Ugly Organ... i think he's too upset and too into him being the martyr for it not to be about him). anyway, the chorus are her talking. after she says he's playing this "saint," he responds with "the martyr." i.e., she's saying he's trying to make himself out to be this better-than-thou saint, and he's replying that he's not actually a saint, but rather a martyr - he's dead...
it's rather poignant, i believe.
to add to this theory, see that video i mentioned. after the first chorus, he says "oh, and one more thing.. YOUR MARTYR". also, at the end, he keeps singing "i am the martyr".
jesus? jesus, that's a dumb comment. |

faye, i agree with you. i don't know what it is about that line, but it gets to me every time.
and "if i could talk to myself like i was somebody else"... i really like that too. |

| Bright Eyes – An Interview with Conor Oberst Lyrics

i think bob dylan used to do that a lot in interviews... use circular logic and give confusing/conflicting information. i think bob dylan's probably a big influence of conor's (in fact, i think "let's not shit ourselves (to love and to be loved) has music very close to a dylan song), so i wonder if that had anything to do with it. |

i'm not even sure what words describe the feelings i have when i listen to this song, especially the second verse. it's like this feeling in my stomach, almost like i really am "floating on air"... a disturbing feeling, that makes me want to cry... but it's a good thing. it's a sense of confusion, of not knowing what to think, or where to go, or what to do, but knowing it will be resolved...one way or another, for better or for worse...conor oberst is perhaps one of the best songwriters of our time. |

thanks to belladonnakills for clearing that up. i always thought it was rather obvious (and it seems like most people on here did too), but i can see where different interpretations can easily come up.
by the way, the scene in the royal tenenbaums in which this song plays is one of the most effective uses of music in a movie i've ever seen. the scene sent chills up my spine. |

personally, i think the phrase "you're just somebody that i used to know" is the greatest "f@#$ you and goodbye forever" type insult ever. it says so much with so little. like "you're nothing to me now". i think it's less "aww, it's too bad" and more "it's over and good riddance" |

so sad, happy and angry. i love how the last part (after the final chorus, no words) portrays emotions of confusion/sadness, happiness/understanding, and then, ultimately unresolved anger over losing a friend (whoever). |

i think the song is beautiful, but i think there's a sentiment lacking from most comments so far... i don't know if conor is really happy about this. there seems to be an element of pain in his voice as he sings, and it's my experience that every syllable and every note has a meaning when it comes to mr. oberst. in general, i think the song is wonderful, but i think it is possible that it's a bittersweet conclusion he's drawing here...
i heard the jason mraz version, and it pissed me off because he changed the title (i can't tell you how angry it makes me). his voice is better, but it lacks something called "emotion". his version, i believe, completely destroys the song by airbrushing it and making it sterile and, quite frankly, crappy. it loses its "soul", for lack of a better word. |
