| Like most Tool songs, I think it probably has more than one meaning. The meaning I hear out of it, because of my experiences, is yet another anti-drug message. Assuming you know about the Rosetta stone by now, its a clever play on words. If you delve into the psychedelics, it is likely that you will not crack the code of the Rosetta stone, because you are high. Being high impedes on one's ability to sort experiences through cognitive learning. So yah. Its not intricate, its a clever play on words, read up on the Rosetta stone, read up on the Merkaba, read the lyrics to sober and you'll get Tool's real message. Drugs will break you free of your chains, but don't rely on them to get to the top, they are the fruit of the tree of knowledge, simply another temptation. Nothing is free. | |

I don't know if I'm accurate on this one but... Jeff's first CD was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club by the Beatles. On that CD is a song called Within You/Without You, by George Harrison... I'm sure many of you have heard it. If you haven't heard or listened to that song I suggest you do. (All you need is Love is another one.) Okay, so the first stanza is asking a question, on the surface its about a girl... on closer inspection it is asking the listener a question "Can you still find the time and the signs To look around" (?) The chorus is about a desire for knowledge, knowing about 'the other side' ; "Everything would change there And we'd all be free" - These two lines are parallels to George Harrison's composition. The third stanza is really cryptic. I read a quote by Pythagoras that said "A stone is frozen music." what this means is that everything is a vibration, like music. A frozen stone is just slow waves of energy. This being said, a mountain is the same as man. "And you place your faith in a mountain But what you don't understand Is that the man is The same old rock" The fifth and final stanza is quite blatant. "These are the times When we live inside our minds" Meditation is becoming very popular, it is the key to a higher form of being, Jeff is saying this should be the time when we live inside our minds. "In the slipstream, It's like a daydream" the higher frequencies or levels of meditation are like a slipstream or a daydream. "These are the days When we're dancing through the haze With our ears to the ground We're searching for the sound Of a dove's cry, but it won't be over until" Jeff is saying that we are now dancing through a haze, unable to see the light so we have our ears to the ground, but we only hear the cry of a dove. The cry of a dove symbolizes death, and the entire world is fighting. Take it or leave it, thats just what I got out of it. I mean on the surface its about a girl... but I just see more in it. This song is bread crumbs. It allows you to tie all the other songs together. Images of enlightenment, awakening, etc are seen throughout the entire album, its easy to see once you've read up on the right material. The 'you' in this song is Maynard's inner child which he is also talking about in jimmy. Also, because of the nature of the lyrics and the fact that I have dabbled with hallucinogens, I would tend to say that Maynard's awakening would have been drug induced..... Another reason I think this is because of lost keys (Blame Hoffman) and Rosetta Stoned... (read up on them.) Aenima, Lateralus, and 10,000 days are all, in my opinion about enlightenment, opening your third eye, and going against the 'norms of society.' If you want further proof read up on all the band member's backgrounds, as well as Alex Grey. Oh, and novaselic666, I partly agree with you but.... I think they just used Bill's quotes to set the mood for the song, since that is what he was all about. Eulogy is entirely about Bill though. |
