| The Offspring – Pay The Man Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I don't know how everyone else refers to the Government, but around here we always referred to Uncle Sam as "The Man". I believe this track is anti-establishment against the Fed. How I hear it, "The Man" governs how we all live via laws and police enforcement. The most obvious point being, the lines 'pay the man'. My opinion is this means taxes. I don't know, taxes seem very obvious to me. Two things are certain: death and taxes. |

| Adema – So Fortunate Lyrics | 13 years ago |

I don't know if there were different renditions of this track released. I'm pretty sure at the end of mine, he says, I love my child, I love my child.... That's plain as day. I also hear, I don't wanna child... I don't know, I'm pretty sure it's there and it would add alot to this track. |

| Imogen Heap – Hide and Seek Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
"Where are we? What the hell is going on? The dust has only just begun to fall Crop circles in the carpet Sinking feeling" This is about a house undergoing a change, specifically a move. The object of this track is seeing the house transform from a living environment to an empty shell. Proof as follows: she doesn't recognize her living quarters; confusion in its sudden change; if anyone has seen what furniture does to carpet over time, "crop circles" is obvious; depression. "Oily marks appear on walls Where pleasure moments hung before The takeover, the sweeping insensitivity Of this still life" Very literal. Many times have I seen stained walls with clean spots where pictures were hung. Interpretation: "pleasure moments" being photographs or paintings, as people record nature or life by this medium often; the house is being ransacked, obvious that she believes her belongings are seen as worthless as they are removed; "still life" being stills, also known as photos. "Hide and seek Trains and sewing machines Blood and tears They were here first" Somewhat less clear, however I believe this to be a description of denial. Perhaps precious memories, and that she thinks this is all wrong because "[she] was here first". "Mm what'cha say? Mm, that you only meant well Well of course you did Mm what'cha say? Mm that it's all for the best Of course it is Mm what'cha say? Mm that it's just what we need You decided this? Mm what'cha say? Mm what did you say?" This is anger, she feels her life is being directed against her will. This was for her 'best interest', seen through the eyes of perhaps adults, towards a misunderstanding child? "Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth Mid-sweet-talk newspaper word cutouts (paper word cutouts) Speak no feeling; no, I don't believe you You don't care a bit You don't care a bit " Her life is being held captive, its owner asking for things to be different so life may return back to normal. "mid-sweet-talk" perhaps her take on meaningless, hollow drivel from someone pretending to comfort her. As some teens (including me at one point) have dramatically said, You've ruined my life! You don't care a bit. This sounds like a divorce to me, selling the house and packing up. My two cents. |

| Celldweller – The Last Firstborn Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Pretty sure this is a reference to war, and I have a new opinion. Many cultures dedicated their firstborn to this and that and such and such, and a popular cause was soldiering. In Rome, times of war often instated the draft and families with more than one child took the firstborn. It just makes sense, in a family of multiples, the firstborn is eldest. :P I don't know why Christians have to hijack everything. I'm personally glad you see gods in everything, but I'm under the impression that idiots just use "magic" (in this case, a supernatural being that gives a shart) to explain away things that they aren't intelligent enough to understand. How does the planet move? Well a big man named Atlas carries it. What's night and day? Well, that's Ra and Set duking it out. Where did we come from? Well, an old white man with a giant white beard made us like a kid killing ants with a magnifying glass. But of course if you have to take this outlook, firstborn could be a reference to Christian mysticism with the death of firstborn infants in Egypt, which infers unfairness of being an innocent child murdered by said old white man with white beard. Just sayin'. |

| VNV Nation – Defiant Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I think this is the happiest, most positive track this man has made. It's so...uplifting. I think he kind of phrases it like a declaration, this is how it's going to be. I think it's strange how he mentions war, endurance...like this is a battle to be the best person you can be, fighting to the last man to do your best. I don't know, I think it's kind of contradictory to say, I'm going to bash my neightbor's head in to be the best person possible, to be defiant till there's no hope, everlasting joy. VNV Nation usually writes about strife, hardship, corruption and human character. Why is it he chose to dwell on a positive characteristic, with his usual die-hard enthusiasm? Weird, how he puts conflict into this. At least in my mind. But I've been flamed before for being "wrong". Sometimes I see this group as a fusion of Phil Collins and Apopygma Berzerk, is that weird? |

| The Birthday Massacre – Walking With Strangers Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I love how the Birthday Massacre does things like this. Does anyone notice the references to multiple personality disorder? Kind of like Happy Birthday, where she references herself, and then the voice in her head. The person switches in each stanza. "My words are falling apart..." that whole paragraph is referencing herself. "Her world is falling apart..." that whole paragraph is referencing this other person. I think she's talking about being a model, a porn star. One side of her does the work and makes the money while turning off the guilt, while the other personality pretends that's not really her so she can deal with herself. Stepping into the light, stepping out of the light...that's her switching people, possibly could be taken literally as well, meaning lime-light or camera flashes. My words are falling apart, in spite of me. She's confused, doesn't know what's going on. I'm stepping out of the light, so she can't see. Stepping out of the light, meaning she's hiding and maybe literally that she's getting out of the "lime-light" or camera flashes. Don't think I'll miss her, but I want to take her picture, when I've found a place where she can't find me. She doesn't like the person that she is when she's doing these things, she wants to take a picture of this other girl so she can prove she isn't her. And she's falling asleep, as she's walking with strangers. Talking cheap as the flies on the wall entertain her. This is kind of what makes me think she's a porn star or prostitute. Or myabe just a scum bag. Her world is falling apart, in front of me. See the familiar words? It's like she's talking about the same person but two different minds. Maybe she's trapped behind her eyes? She's stepping into the light, but she can't see. Stepping into, like stepping out of. Maybe means it's time to work? Reinforces my idea this person has MPD. It's hard to miss her when she's posing for a picture, but I've found a place where she can't find me. Hard to miss her, meaning she's in magazines or billboards everywhere, so when there's a picture of her everyone see's it. |
