I think it's about fate. Like this guy who is somehow drawn west and a girl who is doing the same. It also might relate to reincarnation, like the couple parts (from death) but is reborn and they start all over...IDK Great song, one of my favorites. |

| I agree with Tomayto. To me the song points out the things in everyday life that you can't do much about (crappy job, getting screwed by the government), but instead of doing anything he just stays where he is and doesn't ruffle any feathers. No alarms and no surprises seems to be a metaphor for monotony. As for the get me out of here line, inside this person wants out so bad (also relating to being in a bubble or box and drowning) but lacks the drive, or the opportunity to change the crapiness. Either way its a great song. | |

This song was great to listen to in Great Barrington Massachusetts when the song was recorded. It seems as if he dies but fights it as much as he can to be with his love. The iron gate seems to be the entrance of heaven and the dogs in the sky are those who take the deceased up. The gathering of eyes are those who look around as he denies the beauty of heaven for his love....great song |

I don't really know what the whole song means but I do know that this version is from the album ALIVEACOUSTIC and the version from EISENHOWER doesn't have the second verse about addiction. I think primarily the song is about the singer (which may or may not actually be Brad Barr) who supports a female who doesn't open up (someone comes along you continue to rust), and expects it back. Whether or not he gets the support back is up for discussion. The version on EISENHOWER is better to me because there is a slight note change from Dust to Rust and in the version on ALIVEACOUSTIC the note for both words is the same. Listen to it, it is subtle but there. Either version is great! |

Here’s my take on the story: The boyfriend walks in on the priest and the mother either in transaction for financial support or at least sees them interact closely and flips out. Starts chokin’ the priest and picks up a hammer with the intention of murder. The boyfriend is clearly a felon, blue tattoos come from prison with the hand-made ink from the “clink”, plus we are all lucky he doesn’t have a gun. Billy wakes up wasted in the back of his truck, sees what is happening and either pukes based on alcohol consumption or nerves from what is about to go down. He deduces that this must be his father so he arms himself with the cold milk bottle and busts in. Boyfriend and Billy exchange words and Billy rips the bottle into the boyfriends face and kills him to prevent the death of the priest. When this is over he asks in a forceful fashion why daddy came back and momma says he has been supporting the family. Keep in mind here that Billy calls the priest Daddy and Momma repeats that the priest is Daddy and paying the bills. If A then B and if B then C, then A must also be C. So now the little boy busts in with a milkman’s hat (from the milkman) and gin (Billy’s) both of which he probably found outside and singin la-la-la as if to be saying na na na I got your hat. Milkman chases the boy and walks in to find this. This is probably the best imagery of the song, the milkman standing in the doorway watching Billy and Momma move a body while a priest lay on the ground head cracked with a hammer. They take off and the milkman is left to say what he saw to all those who catch wind of the event. Amazing song, one of Jack White's best, I will listen to this song over and over for quite some time. |

I never thought truckers atlas was about drugs but this message definitely changes my mind. "Going to Montana" in my mind is a clear euphemism for drugs. My groups code for using X substance was "burning cd's"....lets go burn some cd's! |

Your heart, felt good It was drippin pitch and made of wood... I feel like that means the heart is alive and beating (hence "Good"). Usually when a tree or wood bleeds pitch it means it is still alive....not sure...send me a point of view. 3rd planet is my favorite MM song of the week, last week was Styrofoam boots...he moved like disco crisco breath 100% listerine best MM line ever!!!! |
