Regina Spektor – Oedipus Lyrics 18 years ago
I think a lot of people have really good points here, and many interpretations could be true. I Have my own opinion...

I think that this song is like Samson... Regina is looking at a classic story and writing about what would have happened "if". In this case, what would have happened if the king and queen had not sent Oedipus away at birth.

In the original story, the prophesy that Oedipus would fall in love with his mother and kill his father only came true BECAUSE his parents sent him away. He was adopted and raised unaware of his true parents identity, and ended up in battle with his biological father, killing him. He then met the widower (his mother) and fell in love with her, and married her. He found out their true identity later, and was horrified, gouging his own eyes out. Sending Oedipus away did not prevent the prophesied events, it caused them.

SO I think Regina was examining her own version: what would have happened if the king and queen didn't send him away after hearing the prophesy, instead keeping him there but holding him at a distance, not getting too close, always afraid and disgusted by the events that the future might hold. "And to see me makes her awful, and to touch me makes her awful". The queen can't even look at her own son, because she knows that a prophet said he would grow up to fall in love with her. And Oedipus is just a lost little boy, completely unaware of why he is so rejected.
