| Marnie Stern – Ruler Lyrics

You're "not really big on female musicians"? Just, like, categorically? That's a little sexist, don't you think? What I'm big on is extremely original and talented musicians like Marnie Stern. |

I think I just figured out one of the lines, and I'm about 90% sure it's right: "You're resting on your laurels, you're stepping on my toes." Almost positive. I'm so obsessed with this band right now. |

| Feist – Lover's Spit (Broken Social Scene cover) Lyrics

Feist didn't COVER it, but she sings on the version on the band's album Bee Hives. I don't mean to be overly technical about it, but Feist is actually a member of Broken Social Scene and both versions appear on their albums. This is simply an alternate version. |

Also, it's "I know I can WRITE my way out of this black hole"; makes sense with the numerous references to writing, fiction, etc. |

| Ryan Adams – Jesus (Don't Touch My Baby) Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
I read it more as a song about falling in love with a girl who's considering Christianity, and the narrator (possibly Adams, maybe not) feels like he could lose her to religion, like she won't be the same person if she converts. The line "Jesus don't know you / He was just saying hi" to me sounds like she had a brief flirtation with Christianity and he's saying, "Don't take her from me, Jesus," because he doesn't believe in what she's leaning toward.
That might be a radical interpretation, but that's definitely how I see it. |

Wow, I can't believe there're no comments for this one. Incredible, so soulful, so anthemic. |

| Why? – Song of the Sad Assassin Lyrics

|
I feel it's important--although a small change--to note that at least one of the times, he says "Billy the Kid did what he did, THEN he died"--this puts across more the idea of serving a purpose of some kind, or at least the order of things. |

| Why? – The Vowels, Pt. 2 Lyrics

I know this is a minor thing, but it's definitely "Under robin eggs in a nest, you HID a manila envelope"--makes a lot more sense. |

| Why? – Me On Beer Lyrics

Also, I think it's "Don't wanna treat their house like a fish tank," not "they wanna--". |

| Why? – Me On Beer Lyrics

This song reminds me a lot of one of the sections in Al Burian's first Burn Collector book, where he describes the unintentional gentrification of poor neighborhoods by white kids trying to escape gentrified areas. It's a fascinating cycle. And this is a great song. |

These lyrics contain the wisest and most useful advice and thoughts on living I've ever heard in a song. Judah's a smart man. |

| Stars – This Charming Man (The Smiths cover) Lyrics

I think it's a mistake to assume the narrator is female. I always thought it was about an older man and a younger man. No hint of femininity here, really. But I could, of course, be wrong. |

| Broken Social Scene – Cranley's Gonna Make It Lyrics

When I was a Sprint customer and I would call them regarding my phone bill or whatever, and they'd put me on hold, this song would always come on. The weirdest thing. At first I thought it couldn't have been the same song, but I heard the little drum fill thing around 2:46 and knew it was. Totally bizarre; how did Sprint work this song into their hold music repertoire?
Maybe related to whomever managed to snag an Architecture in Helsinki song for their TV spots... |

Reminds me of New Order's "Ceremony."
Always sounded to me like the song in the last scene of a film. |

Kevin Shields and Mary Timony had a baby and that baby grew up and plugged in an electric guitar and wrote this song.
Totally kills. |

Evidence of Fyfe's Radiohead phase, no?
I love the kind of determined sound to this song, and the lyrics he repeats, like mantras. |

| Guillemots – Annie, Let's Not Wait Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
It's definitely "staring at our fears." Not "feet."
"They're such pretty things, they're so cute." He's intentionally making their fears and concerns seem less daunting, less worth worrying about. It's beautiful.
And of course the title is "Annie, Let's Not Wait" (not "Waiting"). |

| The Velvet Teen – Spin The Wink Lyrics

I think it's just some kind of effected piano. But you're right, it's so perfect, and quiet, but this kind of shivering anticipatory excitement runs through the whole break, and it's so rewarding when the guitars come back in and Judah's kind of howling over the top of everything. |

| The Velvet Teen – Noi Boi Lyrics

I think it is "there will not be a me to be scared." It's a wonderful line. It's the rejection of a permanent self. It's an amazing song about being content, even if you have very little. He's happy just being with this person, making enough money to take her out, to pay his rent, and it sounds like that's all he needs. There are some Buddhist-like themes being explored here; lines like "too many people live imprisoned/stuck somewhere between the is and isn't" and "...we'll no longer think on/what it was or what it wasn't" hint at the Buddhist idea of impermanence.
I fucking love this song. |
