sorry guys, this song is not really about getting high. maybe it would have been if it was back in the days of the SCIENCE album. :) this song is clearly about overcoming circumstances and achieving clarity/gaining perspective. the "birds eye" view is talking about seeing something for what it really is... stepping back from things to get a clearer view and look at it objectively. and just to drive home the point, here is a quote directly out of brandon boyd himself about this song: I had a moment in my life about a year ago where I was way too close to everything that was going on and I was blind, I felt like I was asleep. And the clouds parted for kind of a strange reason and I gained perspective. What happened was my hand had fallen asleep on the airplane on the way to Europe and it remained asleep for about 10 days, which was kind of scary. I must have pinched a nerve or something. But as my hand started waking up, the clouds started breaking away from that emotional state as well. The two happened simultaneously, so I created a simple metaphor for it. So it's basically a song about gaining perspective on a situation. |

most of you have it figured out... some still are kinda reaching. just to clear up the confusion, here is a quote from an interview with brandon boyd directly, in which he talks about the meaning behind this song: "That song is sort of covering the idea that there is a very strong tendency for certain media outlets to try and keep us afraid as to keep us consuming and docile and pliable, so to speak. I think it captures that feeling that we don't want to stay indoors, and that even though we're sort of sometimes being forced to, or forced to feel like we have to, you don't necissarilly have to." there ya go. he's referencing the warfare going on around the world and how the media manipulates information to the advantage of their own biases. he's saying we can't just believe everything we hear in the media for that reason (it's "like reading with my eyes closed"). the beginning of the song has sort of a nostalgic feel, like he's remembering a time before the warfare, and challenging us to stop the violence and war and just love one another. |

lestat86 and genomanx, and the like-minded to them who realize what this song is truly about... thank God for you! after reading several posts i was starting to a.) become entertained with people trying to over-analyze the lyrics, and/or b.) become slightly worried with people totally missing the point altogether (which i happen to feel is straightforward and self-explanatory if you simply give it some thought) by thinking the song is about penises. he uses his pen to write music, and he uses his music to express/voice his arsenal of words. his "offensive that's poised and rearing" is like setting off a gun. words can harm, but he doesn't fear the possible consequences. i know brandon boyd is an artistic, creative, philosophical type of person, but the metaphor is actually really simple. period. |
