I'm pretty close to what Echo said. She's hit hard times and swallowed her pride enough to call home for money. But her father can't drop being hard and difficult, so he gives her the runaround and a guilt trip before denying her request. It's pretty much the last straw that ended their relationship. He traded his daughter and the $2000 she asked for in order to continue being as hard as steel. |

Nice find about it being a prequel to Six O'Clock News. I think it's pretty clear that the guy she's singing about is a criminal. Probably more of a low-rent petty one than some connected mobster, though. She's contemplating/threatening to turn him in to the police if he doesn't change on his own. Hence that "her face" couldn't make him give it up, but maybe some hard time will. |

It's a song about a performer who thinks highly of himself, but probably isn't that good. The first verse is about him trying to convince people to hire him. (BTW, Billy Barty was a little person who was a character actor.) Second and third verses are about him traveling abroad, but not really being wanted in either place. |
