He plans ways to keep together, including playing the same song at the same time so they can spiritually dance with each other. He is saying that, even though he isnt happy about it, its alright. He wants her to keep a good relationship with her family. He recognises that soon she'll be old enough to step away from her family and make her own life. And when she does, he will drive all night to a destination and meet her there |

I agree with the previous posts mostly. I believe its him convincing a girl not to get married merely because it is the socially safest way to go. I dont see the gun as a symbol of suicide, but rather of change. Guns are hot, fast, unpredictable, dangerous. However the cold gun symbolises none of these. Entering the marriage will prevent change, cause her to stagnate. If she rushes into a loveless marriage, her life will fly past without her experiencing it properly, straight to the grave (identified by achforyou in the last stanza) Basically there are more ways to live your life than the safe option, take risks, make changes. |

My interpretation of the song is being with someone, but you realise you need to be single for a while. you recognise that although they may be the love of your life, you might not be ready (Do you want to see The place where I am free? Cos in my mind I need it But you're nowhere near to me). You need to explore yourself, so you make them as comfortable and prepared as possible (Leave her there with your things on the doorstep And there's no way around it) You are not sure how you are going to do it, (Down a road that's leading me nowhere And there's no way around it) And in the end you try to reassure them that although it might not work now, you would like to try it when the time is right (I'll be back again) but you still have doubts that they might move on without you(Could this be our last dance?) Ultimately i see the song as a person taking the risk to better themselves as a person, so they can be a better component in a relationship. |

I actually interpret this song as a man heading back to LA, his home town. He is recognising that the place itself is full of imperfections, physically and socially. However he knows that despite the problems, it is still his home. Even though he could move to a much more attractive location, ie with his girl, he feels the need and love for his wasteland of a home. |

If anyone doesnt know, theres a new movie coming out call "across the universe" which is a love story musical set during the vietnam war with nothing but the beatles catalogue. Theres a new trailer out featuring this song with uncle sam and 50 army men singing this in unicent as they enlist americans to vietnam. pretty amazing in my opinion. |
