I know that he's talking about death and abandonment, but uh we don't enter and leave this world on our own.
Just saying, is all. |

We exist in the gap between the click of the light and the dream; we are going were no cars can take us.

| R.E.M. – Belong. Lyrics

I thought it was about revolution.
"These barricades can only hold for so long"
I always wondered if it referred to a single event. It reminds me of when the Berlin Wall came down. |

| The Magnetic Fields – Born on a Train Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
Look, guys, just because you can read loose vampire references into this, does not mean it is Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
It's about drifting, and if that somehow implicates fanged beasts of the night, so be it. But drifting is the main focus. |

Hey, Shady: that abortion thing sounds kind of like it might be right.
Still kinda think it might just be about having a partner with issues, though. |

| Nirvana – Heart-Shaped Box Lyrics
|
Oh man, you guys with your theories about children with cancer and Courtney Love and so on... It's actually about being in a bad relationship, simple as that.
The angel hair reference, by the way, is talking about the fine hair that sometimes falls from the sky in some cities, especially Japan. It used to be thought of as a phenomena, but now it's thought to be spiders' web from tall buildings or carried in air currents. He means he's cut himself on something imaginary, like the pain caused by the love he thinks he feels, trapped in the heart shaped box of his relationship.
The rest of the lyrics are like this - being indebted to abusive advice, wishing he could 'fix her; heal her cancer' when she's 'turning black; being screwed up...' That sort of thing.
I think you guys are looking way to deep into it. |

| Doves – There Goes The Fear Lyrics
|
The Doves come from Manchester with its history of rave - "The Fear" is a term from dance culture referring to paranoia, and "coming down," of course, is the day after.
It's about a woman fleeing her relationship, and makes reference to dance culture and youth. When it says "Think of me when you close your eyes, but don't look back when you break the ties," it's like it's saying GO! But don't forget the good times. |

| A-Ha – The Sun Always Shines on TV Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
|
I like the comment about the sun shining on the screen and stopping some kid seeing the cartoons, but I always thought it meant that - especially in the 80s - everything on TV was sunny and happy and perfect with its happy endings, like how we sometimes just gloss over all the troubles in our lives and the world. |

| XTC – Grass Lyrics

i think he means the lazy summer he and his girlfriend share both on grass and, you know, on grass.
I guess they're sat in the park, quietly happy and high. |

| Arcade Fire – Intervention Lyrics

I think it's about death (fear; face it alone) and war in the name of the church and state and even though you eventually die alone and unrecognized (we can't find you now), yet the cause lives on. |

| X – Johny Hit and Run Paulene Lyrics

|
i think people are being pretty naive when they only see a linear story about rape - it's about the hedonism connected to the punk scene; it's let's get out of our minds and fuck. except... it really is about a crazed predator. |

| Fear – Let's Have A War Lyrics

It's simple - everybody wants to blow up New Jersey, even people like me who've never been there :|
Also a stab at the 'ruling classes' and the whole, detached from reality, concept of them. |

| Doves – The Cedar Room Lyrics

It sounds like an apology to me. I always thought the Cedar Room was a place you go when you die.
I guess he's saying goodbye and sorry. |

| Radiohead – Idioteque Lyrics
|
It's about scaremongering in politics and the media - ice age is a reference to global climate change (global warming precedes an ice age, and we're overdue for one), and nuclear war and we're not scared anymore is pretty simple in its message of "there's always so much to be frightened of that we simply don't pay attention anymore."
Another song that perfectly fits the cynicism of this disenchanted age ._. |

| Radiohead – Banana Co. Lyrics
|
A banana republic is a small country whose sole export is for example, bananas, and they're often under a dictator or military rule.
I have a feeling he's implying that either the UK or west in general are sometimes akin to a banana republic. It wouldn't shock me if our export was war. |

Not that responding with anger is a good choice, but that's what I think's happening here. |

At some points he's talking about sleep and death, and in others it's birth and life.
'Keep the car running' is, I'm sure, a reference to birth. Humanity lives forever through its children. |
