such a great song about a truly amazing naval action and some excellent gunnery from the Royal Navy. would love to have a line in the song about the string-bag torpedo run that allowed the strike force assembled to close with the Bismarck. in my all-time top ten for sure. |

I never really understood the line "soundtrack of our lives" but this is one of those songs that is part of that soundtrack of my life.
regarding the meaning of the song, I'm pretty sure its about a man who is a member of the Navy. he is leaving on a deployment for an extended period of time. not being a member of any service, I can only imagine how powerful those feelings of seperation are. especially knowing that a loved one is knowingly placing themselves in harm's way.
when the band joins in together for the final chorus, it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end! |

when a band that has a habit of playing to a rough formula, goes and composes an instrumental like "last ride in", they place themselves ahead of the creative curve. I do not think I have ever listened to another song that has so much "atmosphere"

you know how a certain song, after not hearing it for a very long time, can make you feel strange? the other day, this song came on the radio, and it had been 10 or so years since I had heard it. I'm not a rock, neither am I a cry-baby, but this song brought tears to my eyes. my own reaction was unexpected.
i really like the way they tell an entire story of these two, in a few very meaningful lines. what a great song! |
