with the materialism aside, i think this song is kind of like the ant and the grasshopper fable. with the lyrics referring to how he was having fun but probably should have been at work and then later stating life handed them a paycheck and they worked harder then this. he also compares us to hummingbirds, possibly meaning that we are living too fast and only burning/wasting energy without accomplishing much. and while doing a whole lot of nothing we lost the plot, our quest for why we exist maybe? or just so caught up in hording materialistic crap that we don't notice life passing us by. |

i myself take this song as a love song. but then again i am kinda sorta falling for this chick i just started talking to. but the first lyrics i think are about how the person sees only the one they like, not caring about others. and the whole string them up, cut them down bit may be how that individual deals with relationships. the second part might be about shut ins or people who don't meet others and them playing with themselves. but that is just my interpretation. |
