The Bravery – Time Won't Let Me Go Lyrics 16 years ago
Taking life for granted.

I wouldn't take it a generation issue.

Kate Nash – Pumpkin Soup Lyrics 16 years ago
It's initially wanting to be in a non-monogamous relationship and to "play" around, but also being wrapped up on feeling smitten that you become indecisive on what you want and how uncontrollable the situation you put yourself in.

Jenny Lewis – Happy Lyrics 16 years ago
When she sings, "So I could be Happy... oh so happy, so happy.." over and over again, it reminds me of the film "Roman Holiday" The scene where Gregory Peck carries a sedated Audrey Hepburn to his apartment and she sings to herself, "so... happy, so... happy" and if you've seen the movie, she clearly wasn't happy with her life.

Not that I'm saying that it's relative, i just thought to put it out there cause they sound quite similar, and the chorus always remind me of that scene.

Jenny Lewis – Happy (Reprise) Lyrics 16 years ago
So simple and haunting.

You can hear a car speeding by in the background. I use to think it was traffic outside of my house, but then i noticed it came from the cd!

Jenny Lewis – Rabbit Fur Coat Lyrics 16 years ago
If you listen closely, you can hear her sigh. Particularly right after "You can live in a mansion house" Supposedly, this song was very emotional for her when she recorded it. It could be just a sigh for breath, but i just love the small details.

Jenny Lewis – Rabbit Fur Coat Lyrics 16 years ago
The rabbit fur coat is a status symbol for wealth and greed. Along with mansion houses and the gold-plated body cast (she was scarred, but still couldn't let go.) The coat is poignant since it portrays the mother's stubborn struggle to hold on to this dream, as dorabeth mentioned, despite her many failures.

It's interesting how she intricate the meaning with the back story. About the girl of less character and the love affair with the father. Taken literally, no matter how hard her mother tried to front being who she wanted to be, she's still the poor girl (taking off her coat and the girl demanding she give it to her.)

The second half explains Jenny's childhood as "the bread winner of the family". Her mother pushed her into acting (the lady she refers to sounds like someone who got them into the industry), but she got older and realized everything her mother was and, unfortunately, how money comes before her child. Rilo Kiley was eventually formed and from what I've read in articles of anything concerning her mother, they're usually not in good terms. But it's all speculations of course, jenny is great at telling stories.

There's irony.. in "The Execution of All Things" she sings about coming to Omaha to exploit the boom in music scene. In RFC, she talks about selling out and leaving Omaha. Despite her roots, she calls herself a hypocrite and how she'll turn out to be like her mother in the end.

The Beatles – Girl Lyrics 16 years ago
it doesn't sound like inhaling at all. nor a sigh. It's more of the clenched teeth sucking in air reaction you do to physical pain. But in this song, it's this girl.
In the 'you've got it bad' way.

Damien Rice – Volcano Lyrics 16 years ago
Another story about a man wanting his fun and nothing more. He leads her on, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Another story of a girl getting herself into a "relationship", and expecting much more than what he provides.

I love how the chorus in meaning is perfectly in sync with each other. It seems like they both acknowledge where the other stands, but are still quite stubborn. He's basically telling her he's not what she's looking for and she isn't a priority of his heart (ouch.) Vice versa, opposite feelings.

I use to think it was "and I'll ask for the sea" which made more sense to me as a selfish understanding. He gives her physical affection (which always mistaken for something more) she'll eventually ask for emotional affection. She gives him 'love', he'll ask for for a mature relationship and sex, if he budges to her wants. Something she isn't ready for, even if she thinks so.

'I ask for the sea' makes sense as well, as both are offering each other what the other wasn't intending for.

In the last verse, it explains that they're both going through a phase at different times in their lives, and have been at for awhile. They're both just as lost, and perhaps hurt as the other one is, and still trying to find out what they want in a relationship. The last line indicates he has though about it, but.. well, she's just too young to treat.

Volcano, to me, is a metaphor for the young lady (volcanoes melt you down, volcanoes melt me down.) for a person who builds up too much expectation out of someone and falls too quickly for them, and eventually end up hurt.

everyone has their own story about this, who hasn't been lead on?!

Rilo Kiley – The Angels Hung Around Lyrics 16 years ago
it's definitely about a death of someone close.
Specifically, everything of the worst and best can happen to you throughout life, but none of these experiences will stop you in your tracks as much as when a close one passes away.

It sounds like the person being mentioned was leading the bad choices in his life.. I wish she can interpret more about him than of herself.

Very much about rethinking life and going through grief. It's hard to imagine someone you care about gone, but the only thing we can do is believe they are in heaven.

'and the angels hung around, as they carried me away'
Does anyone know what she meant by this, though?
I've thought it either meant she'll eventually meet him in the afterlife or that the friend is the angel looking down on her.... but i know im waaaay off ?
