Realizing new things is not always a good thing, either. To lose one's innocence gradually is difficult enough to deal with. But for one to be confronted by reality and have it strip a person of his or her innocence so brutally and with such malice and indifference as is translated in the second verse (death of innocence = bird in snow, rape as the murderer of innocence = bird flew up her gown) is an unfathomably painful form of suffering. He seems to be raising the issue of how humans deal with tragedy and how many people, in the face of crushing adversity, question the existence of, or at least deeply enraged at, god or some higher protective power. As for the first verse, I believe that the boy is the embodiment of innocence, and that innocence is manifested in his seeming lack of sensitivity to the tragedy from which the coin was acquired and also the boys lack of understanding of the larger concepts, such as war and industry, that the bullets and trade magazines symbolize. He's still too innocent to understand the larger picture and thus doesn't stop to consider it's significance. He does understand the value of the coin, however. |
