Aiden, I'm pretty sure you've got it right. "I am a million pieces of the sky I found a way to be alone I'm gonna wait until you want me Until you finally decide to go home" I'm thinking of it as if he's going on a break with a girl. It just makes a lot more sense to me this way. He's found a way to be alone, they go on a break, but the fact that he says he's going to wait until she wants him just shows you that he doesn't want to be alone. The girl wants to work on herself because whatever she's doing is just causing trouble and she's the one that initiated the break because he says that he's going to wait for her. Unless he initiates it and wants her to work on herself and then come back to home. Home symbolizes his persona. He's the home, the shelter and keeps her safe. He's the one that she needs, but she just doesn't realize it because the stress in the relationship is something she can't handle so she leaves. (Imagine a teenager that leaves his house because his parents are stressing him out, but he thinks what he knows is best when in fact, his parents that care for him know what's best and they're waiting for him at home. "Diamond, diamond are you all in the sky? I can't believe all of these beautiful lies As they surround me I will take a photograph of the sky Bury me, bury me Come on, bury me alone in the light" Diamonds in the sky could symbolize other girls, the gem that he's searching for. He's asking if they're all in the sky because he's on the ground and has bad luck with girls and them not working out with the relationship. He's calling out to them and just wants someone that stays true because the past relationships have been a lie. Taking a photograph of the sky would mean keeping what he sees forever. He just wants to stay in the light forever with the diamond that surrounds him. "I am, I'm gonna run this like a lion Another way to be alone And I will wait until you find me Until you finally decide to go home (Don't go home! Don't go home!)" A lion symbolizes strength, him "running this like a lion" means that he's going to be strong throughout everything that's going on. That means not running back to her and leaving her alone. Being the strong one is a way he's staying alone, when you're strong, you can't communicate with the girl, you just have to miss her. When he says "I will wait until you find me" it sounds to me like she actually leaves him, and blames him for what happened in the song. He still loves her and will still wait until he comes to her. That's just how strong his love is for her. But logically, he knows that he if does take her back, things won't work out, he's just so emotionally drawn to her and cares for her (Don't go home!). "I've never had a reason to take me away, yeah I want it to be over But I sit here and wait I saw her smiling from the top of the world I saw her sleeping on, amazing I know If you lower, lower, lower me down You lower me clearly, so come and lower me" He's never had a reason to take himself out of the relationship because he's always optimistic and knows things are going to work out no matter what. He's so passionate for this person. All he wants is the struggle to leave, but it doesn't and the only thing he can do is wait. She's obviously happy because she's smiling on top of the world and he's sitting there waiting for her. It hurts him to see that. The one he is passionate for leaves him, and she's there with another guy, sleeping on him feeling happy. She lowered him down from where he was before the relationship started, and it doesn't bother him, so that's why he says to come and lower him. This song can tie directly into the song following it. Cemetery Weather. In that song, she leaves him and the guy she's now dating, makes her happy, but treats her the wrong way because he's all caught up in himself and is selfish. After all of this, he still wants to care for her and show her love. Not some quick fix. He knows he can make things last, she just needs to believe it. |

To me, this whole album is about his belief in his religion, (i think it's Christianity). He's struggling with his faith in God because he thinks that God is out to get him. My interpretation of this song is this. "Take me to a hotel room And tie me to the bed of my mistakes Kiss me like I paid for this Please don't stop 'till you've raped all my faith" I don't think this is prostitution at all, even though I can still see how you believe that it is. His mistakes being his belief that God is real. In the video 'The Priest and the Matador', it shows that he's in a fight with what's probably his girlfriend/fiance so it's probably her that is doing these things to him and making him believe against God, (Kiss me like I paid for this, please don't stop 'till you've raped all my faith" He wants to remove all the doubt about God and make it a certainty that He isn't real. He picks up the prostitute for a reason, to get his mind off of God and all the doctors. Directly from their myspace blog. 1st VERSE: "Cold water for a straight jacket case Just role the cameras and I swear I'll be ok" That's pretty much a reference to being in a band and being in the position where you are kind of always under a spotlight. When you are constantly being watched, you don't want to show emotion. So it's comparing being in a band to being a news anchor, because they aren't supposed to show emotion when the camera is rolling. "Now 3, 2, 1, this is daily news and breaking By a show of hands, who else in here is faking?" Another reference to not showing emotion and being under the spotlight/a news anchor. The faking line references faking to be happy and fine. CHORUS: "This is where it all went wrong And the words you said were subtle But enough to break the ice" This references how whenever this specific girl would constantly end things with me, she would try to do it in a very "sweet" way, but no matter how sweet/nice her words seemed, the message was still the same: "you're not good enough". She would always start with (or "break the ice" with) something like "I still really care about you, but..." I knew what was going to happen pretty much immediately at that point. "This is a perfect way to end it And I told you I was clever But I think you'll be surprised" That is a reference to something she said to me. She told me once that I wrote really clever lyrics, so that just means she is going to be surprised at how cleverly I would write this song. 2nd VERSE: "You've got a knack for finding red carpet thrills And you've got the nerves, but baby I've got the skills" Finding "Red carpet thrills" is just my way of saying she acts like she is in Hollywood all the time. Or like she's on one of those TV shows like Laguna Beach or the Hills. Red carpets are synonymous with Hollywood, so I just used that as a comparison for her never-ending dramatics. The "nerves/skills" line is another reference to her being dramatic ("nerves" to create problems in non-problematic places) and me being in a band ("skills" being my musical abilities and such) "Now listen up, get your elbows off the table Keep your mouth wide shut Cause I've got something else to tell you" That line just means I want to have a polite conversation without all the stuff she would always make it into (everyone knows it's bad manners to have your elbows on the table...so there's that comparison), and I wanted to be the one doing the talking. The "keep your mouth wide shut" line is a reference to an old Tom Cruise movie I never saw called "Eyes Wide Shut". I just thought it was an original way of saying closed eyes, or in this case, closed mouth. It's kind of unexpected and catches you off guard a little. BRIDGE: "Here's your last chance to clap along with me And here's the part where the audience gets to sing" When I wrote this song, I knew I wanted to have the clapping that is behind it in the music, and I wanted to write as if I was talking to people from the stage. The "audience gets to sing" line is about the following group vocal part. "Now it's 5 to 1 if you were looking for a setup By a show of hands, who else in here is fed up?" I think the "5 to 1" line might be the most misunderstood lyric I have ever written. I have had a TON of people come up at shows and said "dude, you totally can't count...it's 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Duh!" I say to you nay. That line is not a countdown what so ever! It means, "it's five of us (me and all my band boys) against (that's another meaning of the word to...) just the one girl that she was (or is...) The "fed up" line is one of my favorites. I hope to see every hand in the crowd raised when I sing this line. CLOSING LINE: Just tap your shoes now baby, And whisper, "There's no place like home" Cause we're not in Kansas anymore When I was dating the girl who this song (and most the songs) is about. She had these bright red, shiny, slip-on shoes that resembled Dorothy's from Wizard of Oz. Everyone always made the reference whenever she was around, and because she liked that attention, she wore them quite often before she "quit emo". I think that's a pretty self-explanatory line if you've seen the movie. If you haven't, you should go rent it. It's an AMAZING film. Hopefully this was helpful!!! -Jeremiah |

My best friend is moving in June this year, I know it's a long way aways, but I can already feel the depression weighing down on my chest as the thought of her leaving and the high probability of me never being able to see her again. I can definitely relate to the lyrics in this song because she has brought me countless amount of joy in my life, and the only place that me and her are probably going to meet again, are in dreams. I'm a guy, a tough one at that, but situations like this, and me relating to these lyrics so much, it just makes me want to cry. ): |

WrathofGod: " 'Sitting upon this wooden bench' gives me a picture of someone on a cross. " I'm going to have to disagree with you about the cross part. Did you ever think about the second coming of Jesus coming back to earth, all those who don't believe in him wish to kill him. If he were to sit on a bench in the middle of a park, he will be shot at with billion of bullets by non-believers. And about Numbers, and why he always repeats it. I think that it could be about the number "666" the mark of the beast, while the anti-christ will be on the earth, most of you are familiar with this. Those that wish to shop at stores, buy food, go to a gym, get gas, has to show proof of that number on either your forehead or on your hand. The reason why he repeats it could possibly be the fact that you will be asked multiple times. |
