Have any of you seen the video for this song? Nature is their theme of choice and it suits the song quite well. "After all These implements And texts designed by intellects So vexed to find Evidently there's still so much that hides" Knowledge and technology has come so far. We think we know so much, but there is still so much we can not even begin to grasp an understanding for. As a species, with all of this technology and knowledge we still seem to be stumbling around. It hasn't happened yet, but if we keep taking ourselves too seriously we may just end up destroying our future. "And though The saints dub us divine In ancient fading lines Their sentiment is just as hard to Pluck from the vine" Religion has clouded our understanding of who we are and why we are here. Religion gives us this false sense of power as though we rule over everything. How can we keep moving forward as a species if we think we already know what it is we need to know? "I'll try hard not to pretend Allow myself no mock defense As I step into the night" Letting go of much of what one was brought up on and understood as truth can't be easy. An inner strength needs to be there in an attempt to find a new truth and a new self. "Since I don't have time nor mind To figure out the nursery rhymes That helped us out in making sense of our lives The cruel, uneventful state of apathy releases me I value them but I won't cry every time one's wiped out I'll try hard not to give in Batten down to fare the wind Rid my head of this pretense Allow myself no mock defense As I step into the night" Again, false teaching's give us false values and make it difficult to find the right path. When we let go of an old truth for a new truth, even if it is for the better, we are still losing part of who we were. "Mercy's eyes are blue And when she places them In front of you Nothing holds a Roman candle to The solemn warmth you feel There's no measuring of it as nothing else is love" As for me, I interpret Mercy as being Mother Earth. The blue sky always watching over us and she presents us with all of this natural wonder. Nothing can describe the feeling I have when I am surrounded by true nature. To this day, I still need to get out and away from the city and I'm quite happy with who I am, but I have my moments when I feel lost. When I'm surrounded by nature I feel as though I am home and at peace. Quite honestly, I don't even presume I am correct with my interpretaion of the lyrics to this work of art. The Shins are the true authors and I thank them for creating this work of art which grabs a hold of me. |
