I like the lyrics but I have no idea what, if anything, they have to do with the former NBA All-star Detlef Schrempf. Is this somehow related to his move to seattle? |

Me too kenzkenzkenz. Me and my GF have different imagery from the line, "strung down your cheeks". She thinks of the singer as one who plucks the strings by wiping away tears. I think of the subject being depressed and only able to see the yowling of people in the lonely city. |

Seems to me to be about letting go of idealism and trying to constantly fight losing battles with the masses of ignorant and selfish people, and instead just taking in life for what it is. Sort of a zen-like idea, the world is what you make of it, and what not. |

In my warped mind, this song ties directly into California One and Oceanside, and is also about "annabelle", of Annabel Lee fame, whom got swallowed beneath the sea. In general, I find it to be a more positive, romantic interpretation, looking back fondly on a lovely, spicy affair with someone before she disappeared. Whereas oceanside was more about lust. |

Having listened to this song hundreds of times, I recently began to wonder about the white candle and for whom it might be lit. It made me think that the entire song may be about the protagonist lighting a white candle for his deceased love, the green-eyed girl, who perhaps committed suicide, whom he now imagines follows him around on new year's.
Interpreting it that way, with the wisps of smoke following him down around the pier, him reminiscing of his dead love and wondering if she feels better now in the after-life, it really tears me apart. |
