Pearl Jam – Leatherman Lyrics 18 years ago
as mentioned, this isnt part of the mamason trilogy at all. that is alive, once, and footsteps. nor does it have anything to do with vedder's indian relatives - the link posted by 'Stephen Flow' explains to story pretty well

as for the man trilogy, it would be pretty abstract for leatherman to have any link to the other two. perhaps nothingman is the sequel to betterman - the aftermath? betterman isnt just about vedder's mother and stepfather, although that may have been a personal inspiration for writing it. in a more general sense, it was about abusive relationships, and how it can be harder to end them than people think.

so if betterman is about a woman trying to break free of an abusive relationship, nothingman could be the males perspective of the aftermath.

She loved him, yeah...
She don't want to leave this way
She needs him, yeah
That's why she'll be back again

--> about a woman summoning the courage to ditch an abusive boyfriend/husband

and then, the whole theme of nothingman is one of loss, lamenting how he 'caught a bolt of lightning, cursed the day he let it go'. she is the bolt of lightning, someone so wonderful he couldnt believe it, and he screwed it up.

later on in nothingman: 'one just escapes, one's left inside the well' - the well is their relationship, she has escaped from it in a literal sense but he is stuck in the past. he knows he doesnt deserve another chance and that he screwed up, but loves her.

and at the end: 'could've been something; nothingman' - he has lost all he loved

so yes, i think nothingman is a sequel, of sorts, to betterman. leatherman is unrelated

Pearl Jam – Comatose Lyrics 18 years ago
i think dabavill said it best, i agree with his interpretation

while those three lines could be interpreted as pertaining to gay marriage, its too specific. if the song was about gay marriage, we would see lyrics relating to it earlier in the song, and there would be more than three lines devoted to it.

in a sentence: this song is about the freedom to rebel and freedom of ideas and actions; we are not the tools of society, but individuals.

Pearl Jam – Love Boat Captain Lyrics 18 years ago
this song is about a lot of things, its a bit of philosophy on life as much as it is tribute to those killed in the roskilde tragedy. the lines 'lost 9 friends we'll never know, 2 years ago today' pays respect to those who died, thanking them for being fans as much as it is apologising.

the first verse, i think, is about how the band reacted to the accident. 'is this just another day, this god forgotten place' tells of the aftermath of the tragedy, in that they cant bear time itself. 'first comes love and then comes pain' is both about how the band felt and the people who died themselves felt. 'questions rise...' is eddie questioning how it could have been avoided, but we see the answers cant be had, its 'insurmountable'.

it goes on to tell the importance of love, how anything can be overcome if we have that. i think thats beautiful. however, the song is less about love as it is about loss, love just helps us overcome this.

the song has a definite theme of insignificance to it, 'cuz to the universe, i don't mean a thing'. its like, from a humanist perspective, all of this is irrelevant, there is no real meaning or purpose to life, but if we believe in love, the world might be a better place. love will be the salvation of humanity, love can bring us back from the brink of destruction or horror. it can even get us over the pain of loss. ultimately, love is the most important thing in the world, it holds together the fabric of society.

'its an art to live with pain, mix the light in with grey' is such a powerful line, and is just so right. this ties back in with roskilde, the and was reeling, feeling responsible for the tragedy, and they had to live with that pain.

every one of us could learn from this song

Pearl Jam – Masters of War Lyrics 18 years ago
pretty obviously an anti-war song, and yes, the benaroya version is fantastic

its about vietnam, although really it can apply to Iraq as a more modern example. also, i think its less about the war so much as the approach of the leaders to the whole situation. its a polemic vociferation to those sitting behind desks, making war into business, lives into money. its one of the sickest things in this world, how our leaders can be so soulless and consumed in their own games to see the horror they create.

"You that fasten all the triggers for the others to fire.
Then you sit back and watch while the death count gets higher"

Pearl Jam – Go Lyrics 18 years ago
i find it funny that its about eddies truck, its the sort of thing he would write.
although once he said that the song black was about nothing at all, so just because it has been said its about his truck somewhere doesnt make it true

but on some level, it doesnt even matter. the beauty of pearl jam is the ambiguity of their lyrics, and how they can be interpreted by individuals. any meaning is perfect in its own way

in a 1994 atlanta show, at the start of go, it sounds like eddie says 'this is for kurt'

and im pretty sure he has said before that some of his songs take on different meanings after they have been written

so whatever you reckon, its got something to it

and a 'true' pearl jam fan is someone who can appreciate the lyrics and make meaning for themselves, not someone who swallows everything they hear and repeats it
