My Bloody Valentine – Soon Lyrics 16 years ago
Man I LOVE this song! I have devoted many repeats to it and even made my first song imitating its style!

I just wish I could follow the lyrics on paper to go with the track... does anyone have a suggestion on how to do this?

Joy Division – Twenty Four Hours Lyrics 17 years ago
I wouldn't feel right without joining in on picking on Arm. Maybe he should just his name to dick or ass.

My favorite part of the song was the last verse. People only normally go to therapy when they are really in a helpless state, kind of like alcoholics admitting their addiction; so he must've been really messed up. Realizing that EVERYTHING's gone wrong, it's a terrible feeling. The questionable line to me, though, is: "Got to find some therapy, this treatment takes too long" Wouldn't him having a 'treatment' imply that he's already going to therapy? Deep stuff.

And the last line seems vague and personalized and deep, but I can relate. I picture this big truck going like 70 miles per hour in the night and then suddenly realizing when it's 15 ft. away from a wall and that he must stop, but he still knows that he's going to smash into it...

KoЯn – Pretty Lyrics 17 years ago
I will try not to make too many referernces... This song has always akwardly interested me, kind of like "Judith" by A Perfect Circle. But finding out what the song actually seems to be about, like everyone said, gives me such a different look on it.

But anyways, it seems to remind me sort of of "She's Lost Control" by Joy Division. Not completely (seeing how the stories were different but in that they were both inspired by them seeing a very tramatic event involving a girl that compelled them to write about it.

And on a finally note, the claim that the lyrics are making reference to the 11 month old raped and what not, seems plausible but - why does he always end his verses with: "Who do I, feel sorry for?" That is a rhetorical, if not cynical statement, unquestionably. But what does it mean, anyway?

Sneaker Pimps – Lightning Field Lyrics 17 years ago
Fascinating song indeed. The song naturally caught my attention but the lyrics eventually caught on even more. He has such an original and interesting perceptive of being “desperately hopeless” or what have you. Most importantly, this is not cynical which is almost what it suggests for him to have such rational conclusions that almost are (?) ridiculous (?) <“hope's the child of what luck brings”/”points the faith in higher things”>.

Not cynical (like Cake’s “Comfort Eagle” for example) or depressed (like Radiohead’s: “We suck young blood”) or angry (Like Tool’s: “Judith”) or sad (like Tears for Fears’ “Shout”) nor like Siouxsie and the Banshee’s “Painted Bird” even. Maybe the closest would be her “Israel” song.

It’s like a mother beating the dreams out of a child and him “coming to enlightenment” that how she is destroying his interest in his own autonomy is good or proper. As if he is pleased almost. Like a kid wants to practice the trumpet, but his mom keeps beating him and saying: “No play football” <“I’ll be everything I’m not”> and he assimilates into encouraging the negative feelings. I’m losing my grips on it, maybe the guy is like chemically imbalanced or in a state of psychosis. Learned helplessness? The song seems so rational and the protagonist seems so reasonable, but something still doesn’t seem right about it…

Fascinating song indeed.

Portishead – Roads Lyrics 17 years ago
In regards to it's actual meaning, I feel that Jim Morrison puts it best saying: "Real poetry doesn't say anything, it just ticks off the possibilities." Only God knows how the original personal poem read before she more generalized it to how it is now. Or more importantly what was going on through her mind at the time and the catalyst for her to unleash this dam of emotions. But I feel what is most important is that we in fact can all connect with it still. That's, interestingly enough, more significant that understanding the actual song in itself. (In my opinion)

Joy Division – The Only Mistake Lyrics 17 years ago
I am taking this interpretation from the movie Control. It sounds like it could be referring to when he was cheating on his wife with the reporter. But that movie didn't seem to credible.

The only lines that wouldn't correlate were: "Like I did once before." and: "Led to rumours unfound."

The Roots – Criminal Lyrics 17 years ago
"Hater for the greater good" - Very clever

This is a great song. And the title is subtle and deceptive. It seems that the three rappers are giving their take on how we (black people) are subjected to having to hustle and getting illegal money. It makes sense coming after their last c.d.: "Game Theory". The perspectives of this song is very reminiscent of Malcolm X, Huey P. Newton, Tupac: 'I was put in this situation and I accept it for what it is, and the answer is to, at best, revolt against the government. Very Powerful Message.

Anyways - Here are some corrections: you can see that the follow based on the context and the rhyme scheme:

“Maybe it’s faith”
Maybe it’s fate*

“I'm not runnin', I done ran through the mud”
I’m not runnin’, I done ran through the muck*

“If a nigga saw your show”
Nigga’s all you show*

“So real ???”
Some real ethnic cleansin’ is goin’ down with no soap*

“He see the faces at the bottom of the welfare”
He see the faces at the bottom of the well clear*

“Beat the rat, but you're sayin' "look, he think he the mack"
Beat the rap, bet you're sayin' "look, he think he the mack*

“Watch us inside riots”
Watch us incite riots *

“Blue cars and light fires”
Flip cars and light fires*

Dead Can Dance – A Passage in Time Lyrics 17 years ago
Man, an awesome song with a kicking bass line in the second half. One of the few songs I can listen to repetitiously.

Their versatility is awesome but I wish I could find more songs that they made like this one.

Joy Division – Komakino Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a great. Lyrically it does not seem to touch me to much. But Ian's singing pattern is superb. So confident and sure and in sync with the background music.

Most importantly though I think that Stephen Morris's drumming is excellent in this song. I feel that he was much more talented in Joy Division than in New Order.

Joy Division – Shadowplay Lyrics 17 years ago
Title Shadowplay: Seems to be a play on a phrase like “stageplay”. I’m not sure what that phrase would actually be mocking.
The first word in it: “Shadow” I am associating with the Jungian term: “Shadow” or “Shadow Aspect” described as part of the unconscious mind consisting of repressed weaknesses, shortcomings, and instincts. The shadow is instinctive and irrational, but is not necessarily evil even when it might appear to be so. The shadow is prone to project: turning a personal inferiority into a perceived moral deficiency in someone else. Jung writes that if these projections are unrecognized "The projection-making factor (the Shadow archetype) then has a free hand and can realize its object--if it has one--or bring about some other situation characteristic of its power." These projections insulate and cripple individuals by forming an ever thicker fog of illusion between the ego and the real world.
The second word: “Play” I am associating with the theatrical one: consisting of dialogue between fictional characters.
Putting this together with a little reading between the lines and personal knowledge of Ian Curtis I came to the verses being:
First verse: He is either literally (through a physical exploration) or imaginatively searching for truth. But he goes to unrealistic places like: “the center of the city where all roads meet” which doesn’t exist. He finds “truth” in an isolated room by himself. Correlating with the next verse: truth could’ve been found in his personal reading but more so through his own writing.
Second verse: He’s explaining how he is experiencing finding truth as he is on stage. “knowing no more” meaning in a trance-like euphoric state. “Assassins” being a projection of himself. Also being “crowds” in a non ‘shadow-distorted’ bias. They come to greet him and welcome him, but he feels threatened (for whatever reason) and he thinks that they might make him feel uncomfortable. Being startled, he appears unwelcoming and they eventually move to another area.
Verse Three: Is the shadow talking (I came to this conclusion because it seems that he changes his voice tone and pace when singing this line This would also reiterate “shadowplay,” him doing two different characters in the song). The shadow, who is instinctive, says that it acted free (implying for Ian’s benefit). It encouraged Ian to “act out his own death” (on stage) because that is what Ian wanted (for whatever reason). But the Shadow does not know why Ian will not “come out” more and it repeats the same line that Ian started with “to the center of the city of the night, waiting for you.”

Yea, I think that spiralingpsychosis summed it up quite nicely.

Genius group. Strange video (unedited version). Fantastic song. It gives me almost the same feelings when listening to "Sex Born Poison". Gotta look up Lisa Popineau.

Coldplay – Spies Lyrics 18 years ago
If I'm wrong I agree most with devulus. You definently have to look at the context of the artists lives. If they weren't famous when the song came out, it's not about Papparizis. They don't seem to do drugs and don't talk about in their songs: Politics like Communism or the book: "1984". I don't know if they're naive, but they seem to be more basic, so I could believe insecurity could most closely relate to them. I think people have a tendency of projecting their own lifestyles into the interpretation of things which distorts it in unnesary ways.

But I personally feel that it's reffering to paranoia, something I'm suprised wasn't brought up more. I've experienced something like that before and it's trippy, you get the wierdest vibes from everyone. I don't think that "insecurity" would evoke so much emotion in a song either.

Also people with paranoia tend to allude to imaginary beings in their songs for some reason:

1) Kinks - Destryoyer: "There's a yellow man inside of my head."

2) The Doors - When the Musics Over - "The face in the mirror won't stop, that girl in the window won't drop."

3) People often refer to the "Grim Reaper" or even ghosts
Etc...

And, not for nothin, but I think that the bass line during the chorus is what seals this song shut. Who would've thought that 5 notes could be played so beautifully?

Air – Sex Born Poison Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, definently seems to have to do wih sex.

But I think that guy voice is actually the girl talking:

1) She's asks him to "use his GUN of LIFE" 2) She says she's not afraid to die in his arms, sound more like something a woman might say than a man.

And the girl speaking is actually the guy responding:

1) "Who dares to wake me? PRINCE from the BioMass" - Prince, meaning guy.
2) "Swimming in the waves of your intimacy" Seems like something more likely to occur from a man than a woman's.

I just don't think I get the whole "Poison" thing. Mabye it has to do with him being a Prince of the BIOMASS. I don't know...

Great Song
