this song is basically about death. the human fear of it- the obsession with staying young, almost forgetting that death will happen, inevitably. you make all these plans, and work out everything, and then one day, out of the blue, you can just curl up and that's it. i think the reference to falling asleep with a broken heart is actually a reference to death- in 'Tuesdays with Morrie', Morrie says that he believes when you got to sleep, you are dead. Maybe not physically, but within. I think this is similar- you fret and worry in life, all through life, over trivial things, and eventually you have to die- like laying awake mulling over the example of a broken heart, only to inevitably drop off to sleep. the reference to jesus christ seems to be a joke on culture today. a few years ago, people lived in fear that if they put a foot wrong, they would go to hell. but now you expect god to forgive, often believing life will be 'better with jesus'. but, with jesus, you will be expected to give up your 'pleasures'- alcohol and sex- and be righteous, even if that is not your idea of heaven- you live with this belief without truly realising what it means. the last section employs a belief i've had for a while now. the comparison to a circuit board- that will, with sufficient power, go around in circles doing the same thing over and over, the slightest flaw sending it to disaster, is an accurate one. that you will, no matter how hard you try, be 'reborn', and simply come back to make the same mistakes over and over, without means to decide upon change. breakdown- time can be innacturate. within a black hole, time stops completely. how, i am unsure, but it merely does. and time can vary from person to person, clock to clock. there's a digital clock in my room that goes a few minutes further forward each day, down to a simply minor error. anyway, i'm babbling. |
