| Cat Power – Not What You Want Lyrics | 18 years ago |

The most harrowing song I've ever heard. Minimalistic, repetetive and brimming with pain and loneliness - just what Chan does best. I think this is a song that pretty much anyone can relate to as well - the disease that is unrequieted love, or even lost love is one of the most painful things human beings can go through. For me, this PERFECTLY conveys that feeling. |

I would say this is without a doubt a song about the horrors of war. I'm not sure whether it's referring the first or second world war, but it could definitely be a Sassoon or Owen inspired lyric. "This is the room, the start of it all No portrait so fine, only sheets on the wall I've seen the nights, filled with bloodsport and pain And the bodies obtained, the bodies obtained " to me, this lyric is from the perspective of a man in the trenches. The second line in conjunction with the title (day of the 'lords') represent the drastic inequality squaddies faced compared to officers and higer ranks who did far less gruelling and disturbing work but were offered comfort and security - as opposed to mere sheets on the wall. 'The bodies obtained' is fairly obvious, and scattered through the song to good effect. "These are your friends, from childhood, through youth Who goaded you on, demanded more proof" The various references to youth could be demonstrating the way that men from very young ages at the time of the war were endlessly flooded with propaganda and fallacies about the nobility and heroism being a soldier comes grants you. "No room for the weak" is a poignant statement, and carries a harrowing truth, although perhaps a quite ironic one considering the men involved in the war were all naive to what they were entering into and therefore were ALL rendered weak? Just a few thoughts, maybe a load of crap. |
