Tool – Parabola Lyrics 12 years ago
To me, this song has always been about reincarnation. 'We barely remember who or what came before' - Carl Jung theorized the existence of a collective unconscious passed from generation to generation. It's comprised of general knowledge that all people instinctively know or feel without being able to place how they learned it. When a spirit is reborn, it loses its memory of its past life. But through the collective unconscious, the memories of our past come echoing back to us.

'This pain is an illusion' - in the grand scheme of things, our pain is fleeting. What is agonizing to us today is gone in the blink of an eye. But we focus on our pain and suffering and build it up into more than it needs to be. We waste our fleeting experience of this life on the things that make us unhappy.

'This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality' - our bodies won't last forever, and while we're inhabiting them, we're constantly reminded of our mortality. But in the end, we last forever.

Otep – Jonestown Tea Lyrics 14 years ago
I admire Otep so much for being able to be so open, and not trying to water anything down. It must be such a horrible and painful thing to think about, and yet she just keeps the words coming. Her voice is amazing, and her lyrics are incredible. It's great that she's devoted so much effort to giving victims of abuse a voice. I'm literally blown away.

Placebo – Haemoglobin Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that if the song is about racism and violence, then the reference to haemoglobin is there because it's something that every human has and needs to have to live. It's a common thing, and it's the same inside of everybody, regardless of skin tone.

Placebo – Pierrot The Clown Lyrics 14 years ago
I might not be reading into this very much, but I really see this song as being about an abusive relationship. It seems to me that the victim of the abuse is so infatuated with the abuser that they'll endure anything from this person. They see this person as being their polar opposite, and because of this, they worship the abuser because s/he has everything that they don't. The abuser is well-liked, popular, probably good-looking, and has a lot of friends. The victim doesn't seem to be like that at all. Probably the victim admires the abuser. They're so impressed by the abuser that all they want is the abuser's attention. Any acknowledgement at all makes them happy.

The references to drugs makes it interesting as well. One or both of them seems to be using. The victim probably uses to numb the physical and emotional pain of the relationship, and the abuser probably uses it to fit in or 'unwind.' The abuser could even be the supplier to the victim.

I don't know; I guess that's not really a 'deep' opinion, but that's what I get from this song.

Dir En Grey – Obscure (English) Lyrics 14 years ago
I definitely think that this song is about abortion. That's the strongest vibe I'm getting from it. However, the video brings to mind a more primitive kind of abortion. Back in the olden days, I'm not sure exactly how long ago, but before birth control, when a whore got pregnant in a brothel, she would be taken to a place where they would pretty much force a miscarriage by beating her repeatedly. It was a very horrible thing. The line, 'the night begins and people start to awe' kind of makes me think of what they might be admiring - a very beautiful woman who you would never know had been pregnant before? But then comes the mentions of the needle, so really they're talking about modern-day abortion. It could be both, I guess.

Otep – Nein Lyrics 15 years ago
It's my understanding that Shemaya was abused during her childhood, so I think that's probably what this song was about - surviving that horror and becoming strong in herself. It's an anthem of learning to fight back, and deciding to live and not let someone else keep you opressed.

I think when she says,
'my enemies are plotting
my organs are rotting'

she's refering to people who want to hurt her further - her abuser/s, perhaps? And saying that her organs are rotting might be her way of describing her injuries and her pain.

'Paper girl, burn the world
I pass the flame to you'

I think that the paper girl is every other person out there who has been or is being abused. They are fragile, afraid, and their words have be power to set them free, but they might not know this yet. 'Passing the flame' might be her way of saying that she's passing on her experience and letting them decide whether to fight back, and in doing so she's shining a proverbial light on them. Shemaya actively works with groups that help victims of domestic abuse - I think that the people she helps are the people that she's talking about here.

Otep – Home Grown Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree that it's about domestic abuse. I hope to god it's not Shemaya's personal story - I read that she was abused throughout most of her childhild.

Acid Bath – Scream Of The Butterfly Lyrics 16 years ago
My feelings about the song is that it's about a prostitute or a woman who has been highly abused for the majority of her life. She gets pregnant and has an abortion. But I almost wonder if she isn't portrayed sympathetically, more like a victim of the circumstances then a criminal...?

But honestly, I don't wanna get involved in a flame war, so I won't elaborate further.

Otep – House of Secrets Lyrics 16 years ago
Otep Shamaya has such awesome vocal capabilities. I'm very envious of her. She can make her voice shake so realistically, it makes me picture someone curled up in the corner of a dark room, shaking and rocking back and forth and talking to themselves for comfort.

I think this song might be about the sexual abuse she underwent as a child. She was told to keep quiet and not tell anyone what she did. But in the end her anger finally boiled over, and she screamed for a rebellion, an uprising, where the truth is shouted to the sky.

'We're all alone
I will tell you of loneliness'
seems to describe her feelings of isolation with her abuser, and maybe a feeling of powerlessness because she's just a child, and she doesn't feel like she can escape.

'But the child is unable
To run, run, run
And flee his tower of Babel'
Again, 'the child' feels powerless. She can't escape, so she's stuck here. 'Tower of Babel' refers to a biblical place where the humans tried to build a tower that would reach heaven. At the time, there was only one unified language, so they were able to communicate and work together. However, God grew angry with their effort and cursed them, scrambling their languages so that they couldn't understand one another.
I think in the song it's meant to denote how what happens 'in the house of secrets' stays there because there's always a story to explain away the abuse that takes place inside.

Well, that's my two cents.

Angelspit – Paint Hell Red Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this song describes a girl. Maybe little red riding hood, maybe not. The girl is a sadist who lures men into her bed and then tortures them. I think some of the references to he activities may indicate cannibalism, which makes sense, because Angelspit frequently comments on their fascination with eating human flesh. If you like this song, you might also like their song Devilicious.

Puscifer – Rev 22:20 Lyrics 17 years ago
I think that this song is basically about a sexual obsession with someone. The religious references are an interesting touch. I think it's a possibility that the song is talking about a woman from the bible, like Delilah or Mary Magdalene (for whom the song 'Magdalena', also sung by Maynard, was named) or some such person. Of course, this could also be to show the difference between lust and religion and sort of mock Christianity. But I like to think it's about a Biblical figure because that makes it more interesting to me.

Well, that's all I have to say.

(Background note: Mary Magdalene was a prostitute, so lusting after her would be normal.)

Akira Yamaoka – Room of Angel Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is, I believe, about Walter and his Mother.

But it a different meaning to everyone. When I listen to this song I feel like it's about me, my Mother, and my Mother's drugs and credit cards. It's basically a feeling of wanting to throw something (or even someone) away so that you don't get dragged down into their destructive void. It also seems to have some underlying self-destructive themes.

if I had died
I would have never felt sad at all

I understand the feeling that this line conveys. It's not so much wanting to kill yourself as wishing that you had died a long time ago and been spared all the suffering you aren't fully able to overcome.

I don't feel enough for you to cry

Numbed down by too much anger and sorrow, you stop caring about yourself. I get like this after me and my Mother have a huge argument and she makes sure to hurt me as much as possible.

so sleep in your only memory of me
my dearest mother

But you still want to protect this person, because you just can't fully hate them. I can't hate my Mother entirely because she is, despite her desperate desire to get rid of me, my Mother.

This song so perfectly conveys such screwed-up feelings. I love it.

Evanescence – Like You Lyrics 17 years ago
Amy Lee's sister died when Amy when only six. From what she's said this song is about her saying that she not only feels guilty for still being alive but that she misses her Sister and wants to die to be with her. In the song she's describing the overwhelming desire to commit suicide in order to be with a loved one forever. She also says that she'd rather not grieve; she'd rather go and be with her sister.

This song has a deep meaning for me. Of course, the person I associate with it isn't dead, but I can relate to that obsessed feeling of needing to be with someone, just in a different sense.

Slipknot – The Virus of Life Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's a stalker talking about his victim. He loves her and at the same time he wants to tear her apart with his bare hands. He constantly lusts after her. She's like a plaything to him, something he'll abuse and then throw away because 'it broke.' Like a toy or a doll.

God, I just read something today that went perfectly with this. It was about three serial killer/rapists who saw their victims merely as toys to be played with and then thrown away.

Slipknot – Vermilion Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this song is about a man's obsession with a woman. When he talks about bringing her home forever, it's possible he's talking about killing her or enslaving her so that she's always there with him and she can't ever leave him.

'My Dahlia, bathed in possession' - the moment I saw that I thought of the Black Dahlia murder, where a woman was brutally gutted and torn in half by a killer who was never caught. 'Bathed in possession' may be that in his eyes he sees her as his own Black Dahlia, the woman he loves enough to destroy.

It also seems that the woman in the song is less fixated on him then he is on her. He feels like he can't breath without her, but she knows that she could be just as happy with someone else. He gets frustrated because he wants her to love him like he loves her. In his mind she's the only one but he knows that in her mind he's one of many. He's desperately trying to make her permanently his so that he'll never be forced to give her up.

'I'm a slave and I am a master' may mean that he is a slave to her but that he is a master to her as well, perhaps dominating her with force to keep her from being able to leave him.
'I exist to my need to self OBLIGE' may mean that he's saying he lusts after her and that he has to have her, even if she's not willing. He really does love her, but he can't allow her to control him completely. He has to grab her by the neck to keep her from possessing him completely and leaving him totally broken and vulnerable.

'She isn't real' may mean that he fell in love with an ideal. He loves what she represents and he mistook that for her, but in the end he realizes his mistake in falling in love with someone who is just an effigy of something else, something almost inhuman.

Slipknot – Gehenna Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song may very well be talking about a relationship where the man is sick and tired of the woman jerking him around and abusing him. Talking about cutting her open could be literal or figurative. He seems to be saying in the beginning that he loves her and wants to be with her but she won't let him and in the end that he hates her and wants her to die because he can't bear to suffer beside her anymore.

Unrequited love is hell. Hell is Gehenna. That may be this song gains its title.

KoЯn – Hushabye Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about lover's suicide where one person backs out at the last minute even after having agreed. The other person is saying, 'I won't force you. I'll go alone then. I wish you would come with me.' Basically it's loving someone and wanting to hold their hand when you die, but that person refuses to allow it.

It's really a beautiful song.

Mindless Self Indulgence – Panty Shot Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about how the media uses sex appeal to convince us to buy stuff or to cater to specific sexual needs. Basically he's saying that people ignore this blatant sexual depiction of minors because we're used to it. They dress little kids up in little clothes and have them pose for modeling pictures and basically turn them into human MEAT.

I like this song and the way it gestures to the disturbing obvious.

Tool – Lateralus Lyrics 17 years ago
One of my friends (A huge fan of the band) told me this song is actually about a mathematical theory (Not Pi, a different one.) He said it's basically an endless spiral of numbers, and that is what this theory says makes up our psychical being. Hence, the song might be about following the lines of our own existence to wherever they may lead us. Basically dissecting our lives to discover what exactly 'humans' really are.

I'm not sure if he's right, but it sounds pretty legit to me.

I originally interpreted it to be that he's talking about ignoring society's set rules and set thoughts to discover the meaning behind emotion. 'Going where no one's been' could be describing learning the secrets of life and existence. What we know to be real is only real because we are taught that it is. For instance, if someone is born without the ability to see the lines, any set boundaries of sight at all, would they see in a giant mess of color because it all runs together, or would it all just be almost inconceivably blurry? What we see is what we are taught. To me this song symbolizes breaking from what we are taught to glean understanding of existence on our own.

Angelspit – Girl Poison Lyrics 17 years ago
This is such a meaningful song. It's obviously about how society likes their girls the younger the better, skinny, half naked, and posed like porno stars. This can be viewed in several clothing ads where the kids are barely dressed and told to pose like full-grown models. Models are supposed to be sexy, therefore little kids posing=sexy in the eyes of society.

Also, 'One more girl on an insect diet' probably means another girl starving herself so that she can be skinny and therefore be 'loved.'

'Just to satisfy some sick fuck' probably is talking about how men these days are encouraged by the media to be attracted to these young girls and therefore, people see nothing wrong with this behavior.

'Pedi-sinister girl-next door' seems to be speaking of a young girl who seduces older men because she's taught that that's just what girls DO; they have sex.

submissions
Angelspit – Skinny Little Bitch Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about dieting and changing your appearance for the sake of being beautiful and accepted. People turn themselves into sexual objects because they feel it's the only way to get love but they're really only dehumanizing themselves.

The title 'Skinny Little Bitch' probably refers to a shallow anorexic/bulimic person who starves themselves. 'In today, out tonight' might describe bulimic tendencies. You eat during the day then in the evening when you're alone you induce vomiting so that you can stay thin.

(Another note: 'Devilicious' is misspelled in the title and the lyrics.)

Disturbed – Mistress Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't necessarily see it as a song about love. 'Mistress of Burden to Idolize' might be a desired person or thing. Something that is worshipped and lusted after.

The parts about standing on the edge of her mind might be talking about playing a deadly game of sorts, like being blackmailed. He's watching the object or person take ahold of him and ensnare him to destroy every last piece of him.

It could very well be about a woman who manipulates a man. The man loves the woman with all his heart, but the woman is only using him. When this becomes apparent, the man is overcome with grief and anger. He hates her as much as he loves her but he's still obsessed and that won't change.

Therefore I don't think the song is about someone losing the love of their life to another man so much as it is about being used by 'the object of desire.'

Angelspit – Jugular Lyrics 17 years ago
I cannot believe I'm the first to comment on this song!

Well, I think it's obvious. It's about emo posers and people who like to play angry when they don't have real problems. Like, 'My little Sister used some of my makeup, I wish she were dead, I hate her so much!' things like that. Angelspit is mocking these people and saying, 'it's been the same deal since 1980, you've just jumped on the bandwagon and you have no real reason to.'

System of a Down – Mr. Jack Lyrics 17 years ago
Sorry if I'm interrupting an ongoing spiel, but I'd like to say this.

I know the meaning of this song I think.

It's about political injustice, such as dictatorship. The line, 'Is that the mouthwash in your eyes' may refer to the fact that A) it's apparently early in the morning, and B) the person blinded themselves and never thought that anyone would come to take them and their family away. They thought everything would be fine, they could get away with defying a dictatorship. But they couldn't and now even their family has to pay the price.

'Where you at, at the side of the freeway in the car' they're being taken out of the car and moved perhaps into a different car, perhaps elsewhere.

'Is that the trick of your disguise' could mean, 'are you just gonna deny everything? For the love of God, we could very well be killed! Do something!'

The line about little men and big guns can refer to the fact that the people who have come to take them into custody are just little pawns in a game but they've been armed like something worth protecting. He's saying they're being taken away as prisoners by these people.

'You must face authority, you're nothing like me,' reminds me of what I learned about the holocaust. It's like saying, 'You're a different race so you cannot be allowed to live! I am superior!' (The rage in this part astounds me.)

'Fuck you pig' is the people screaming back. Basically he's saying, 'screw you, we've done more with OUR lives than you have with yours.'

'You ran the light at dawn, protectors on your back' he might be describing an attempt at escaping that meant that only one person got out.

But yeah, that's what I think.

I actually think that this song is supposed to have a vulgar undertone. It's about sex between two people who are, for the most part, apathetic. They don't hate each other or anything, but they don't really love each other. They go through hollow motions to produce the only thing they know how to feel, sexual release.

We're the has-beens of husbands- sharpening the knives of young wives.

I think that part means that they're lousy in relationships. 'Sharpening the knives' might mean giving the wives a reason to want them dead.

I think it's about a relationship that's screwed up. I think that the two people might love each other, but they both have a lot of problems. Say, they're broke and living in a broken-down trailer and the wife is depressed and the husband needs to settle down and get a freaking job but refuses to. They're saying that they're miserable but it's not necessarily because of each other; it's because of themselves and they know it.

I think it might be about being in love with a girl when you're messed up for whatever reason. Like, he's saying that the girl is all he needs, but she's also all he has. The guy could be on drugs or badly in debt or he could be young and abused, and he's fallen in desperate love with someone and he adores her. She's like his crutch to get him though all the really crappy times.

Flyleaf – Cassie Lyrics 17 years ago
I wonder about this song. I understand the meaning, but it kinda scares me. I think it's wonderful that people stand up for their faith, but it's such a tragedy to be glorified. Like telling people to commit suicide. I mean, I won't say that people should answer no. But I think that this song makes it sound like everyone SHOULD say yes. But not everyone wants to die. If someone answers 'No' even if they do then yes, I guess that's wrong, but maybe they didn't want to die? Then maybe they didn't believe in God because they didn't believe in Heaven. But maybe they did believe in God but still wanted to live. Is that wrong? I mean, when you stop and think about it, is it wrong? Yeah, it sounds crummy, but you know, You can't KNOW what YOU would do in that situation. Not until you've been there can you say with certainty what you'd say. So we may say that claiming not to believe in God is horrible, but if we were in the same situation maybe we would say no too?

I don't know about this song. I think it's pretty but it frightens me. The singers may be speaking just about their own opinions (and there's nothing wrong with that)
but it seems almost like they're talking down about people who would say 'No.'

I know I'm reading far into this, but I've always been cautious about religion. I've watched it corrupt my Mother and fill her with hate. I know not all Christians are like that, but I've always been cautious about beliefs because I don't want to get drawn into something that looks pretty from the outside but is nothing more than a mess of hate and lies on the inside.

Good song anyways, maybe more so for Christians, Maybe not.

I personally think it's just about revenge. It could be revenge on anyone. If you're into the supernatural, it could be about a murder victim who's spirit reappears to kill their killer. Awesome song.

I think it's talking about war in the world, and a person who rules over the country instigating the violence. They're sick and tired of killing people but it's beyond them now. They laugh at the people who try to conquer them and risk innocent lives. All along they want to leave and go somewhere else, perhaps to the afterworld.

I personally think it's about unnatural modifications in general, INCLUDING drugs.

'O child of Balem,
I hear you wailing
Your love Muscle refuses to grow
When nature fails reach for the elixir
Boldly rush where Angels won't go.'

I believe Balem might be a figure who appeared (briefly) in the bible as some sort of idol. Therefore it is highly likely that 'Boldly rush where Angels won't go' refers to Sodom and Gomorrah, the city of sin from which the term sodomy (A term that refers to 'unnatural sex' such as oral, anal, and most probably homosexuality.) is coined. However, in this context Sodom does most likely refer to anal sex. In Sodom and Gomorrah, their sin was said to be the men's tendency towards their own gender. Historians have said that Sodom was probably full of homosexuals. It was also made infamous for rape, which is proven when Lot, Abraham's relative, received two angelic visitors and the people begged for Lot to surrender his beautiful guests to them so that they could sleep with the visitors. Instead, Lot sent out who wife and daughter, who were raped and tortured.

'Pattern the body' might be speaking of the lines drawn on one's face before plastic surgery to ensure proper cuts. At least, that's what it seems like to me.

'Blissful cocktails make a God from Heathens' might speak of drugs used to get high. Hence the 'bliss.' You take these drugs and start to feel better about your shitty life. Therefore it makes you feel powerful, making you a 'god' from a 'heathen.' This line also may speak of beauty products that people use. You suck it in and viola! You have godlike plastic skin-deep beauty. Miracle, Eh?

Well, that's all I have to say. Make of this what you will.

This song is like a story to me. Here's how I hear it:

Part 1: It's about humans living in a world full of craziness and mistakes. A divine being watches all of the life and happiness of the world from Heaven and is saddened and pleased. He's happy that humans are so full of energy but sad that it causes them to get hurt.

Part 2: There is a human child who prays for redemption from her sins and from her painful life. She begs to be taken to heaven rather than to be made to suffer, yet her purity and ability to love without prejustice inspire the God and make him remember that the creations of humans (by Him or another force) was not a mistake. Therefore, she lives.

Part 3: The girl finally washes her hands of her miserable life and she takes off, going someplace where the God cannot reach her, like to another land under the jurisdiction of another God. He's left staring at the remaining people apathetically and withdrawing from them by not listening to their outcries and hymns anymore. He just watches time pass and anticipate the death of man.

That's how I see it.
