does anyone else see some similarities between this song and the book "the perks of being a wallflower" by stephen chbosky? not saying that the song was based on the book, but there's some parallels between the mix tapes made for charlie's sister with songs by the smiths on them and such. just something i noticed that probably doesn't make and sense, so i'll shut up.

i love this song for its simplicity. sometimes lyrics can become too clouded by metaphor and their meaning or what the writer wanted them to mean is lost. these are very straightforward yet meaningful lyrics. if a guy dedicated this song to me i would probably cry, i'd be so touched. |

i don't see it as something so specific as losing your virginity or the first kiss. the way i see it, he has to part with someone he loves for reasons beyond his control, and he just wants to have a memory or something to hold onto after they part. this is a gorgeous song, i think everyone can relate to it at some point in their life. |

did it ever occur to some of you die-hard anti-posers "punks" that people might actually like this song because it's, oh, i don't know...good? you're so quick to accuse hrc of selling out just because they have one song that is more popular than the rest. that's most likely not due to an expanding fickle teenybopper fanbase, but more to the fact that their older material is harder to come by. new hrc fans are most likely going to encounter their newer material (like "sorry about tomorrow") first and then expand into their older stuff. hot rod circuit is an amazing band, and the more exposure they get, the better. |

in response to everyone who has been insisting that the ataris aren't punk, or aren't emo, or are punk, etc., i would just like to say a big old WHO CARES. there are really only two kinds of music: good and bad. and the only person who can decide that is you. i don't know why people get so caught up in labeling what they listen to. why can't we all just listen to what we like, regardless of what anyone calls it? anyway, the song. i love it. i know people keep calling the lyrics cheesy, but honestly, who can't relate to them? they may be more simplistic but they're straightforward, expressive, and real. this is one of my favorite ataris songs. |

first, i'll point out some all-encompassing insanely brilliant lyrics in the song:

"and as the curtain falls, just know you did it all, the best that you knew how, and you can hear them cheering now. so smile and show your teeth, 'cause you know you lived it well."
anyway. yes, the first few times i heard this song, i was a bit put off by the imagery at the beginning, about ripping the hooks out and such. i really think it's all just a tie-in to the water/ocean imagery used in the chorus. the end of the song is really what makes it what it is, though. it's indescribably beautiful. |

this song makes excellent use of contrast. the rhythm and melody are upbeat and catchy as hell, but the lyrics are sad and cynical. saves the day pulls this combination off, creating a song that's fun to listen to and full of emotion at the same time. the lyrics are a bit more simplistic than some of their songs, there isn't as much use of metaphor and descriptive language, but it fits the song. i'd definitely say "certain tragedy" is one of their best. |

this song generally puts me in a good mood. the lyrics, however you want to interpret them, definitely have a more positive tone than most songs by the ataris. wherever the person in the song is now and whatever happened to them before they got there doesn't matter so much because they're happy now. i do like the version of this song on "let it burn" better than i like the one on "end is forever". i don't know why. |
