| @anal-y-sis Congrats Anal-y-sis! This is spot-on. The camel description appears to be dated now, but perhaps not back in the 60's when Dylan wrote this. It meant a crude person, and was used mostly in France. Anyway, the gist is the same as another commenter, but there's more specifics here. | |

| @[OldFart53:17748]. Your Uncle Bill is correct. Thus, the "very best" refers to the young men, the vast majority of whom will always be easily led into war if the small cabal of wealthy elite put out propaganda that "those dirty bastard (fill in the blank...any "other" will do!) MFers are here to take our women! Take our land! Take our liberty!" Even the few who see through the ruse will feel tremendous pressure to conform, and will often be called unpatriotic if they don't support the war of the day. | |

| @[rikdad:17747] thx for this spot-on take. I don't know how so many others can miss this. I understand big picture thinking is not for everyone, but when it's put on a silver platter....c'mon people! | |

Writer17 please don't fall for the RW propoganda that Reagan "won" the Cold War by outspending the USSR. When in history has a war EVER been won by "outspending"? The fact is when the USSR collapsed, not a single conservative (neo or otherwise) knew it was coming, nor had that reason ever been used DURING the war. It was a propoganda grab, pure and simple. Imagine how unbelievably stupid the USSR must have been to actually SPEND themselves into oblivion, ESPECIALLY when they had enough nuclear power (and still do) to blow up the world several times over! They also had armies bigger than the US. This PR excuse of winning the war by outspending them might sound plausible at first glance, but upon any significant scrutiny becomes absolutely infantile. To explain ALL the conditions and forces at play in the breakup of the USSR could take months, but the simple version is this: the USSR was held together by FORCE. Russia was the 800 pound gorilla, and had almost everyone else under their thumb. This wasn't going to last for too long no matter what. The main driver in the breakup was the communications (technology) revolution: VCRs, telephones, tape recorders, satellites beaming TV everywhere, the internet and its predecessors, computers, tiny cameras, expanding communications networks, etc. In the USSR, the state controlled the image of the US, showing mostly film from the 60's of social protest, violence in the streets, and police brutality. NONE of the good stuff was ever shown. This false picture became impossible to perpetuate with the communications revolution. But it wasn't just the image of the US - it was also the image of the USSR - everyone happy to be together, full of bliss and happy to sacrifice for the "nation". It was false, and when everyone could clearly see it was false, it was just a matter of time before the dam burst. |
