Florence + the Machine – Dog Days Are Over Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about a girl who's reluctant to embrace happiness, probably because she's been hurt in the past by someone who made her happy. She's stuck in the stagnation of the dog days and is more comfortable that way. So when "happiness hit(s) her like a bullet in the head" - when another person comes along, someone who makes her happier than she's ever been - she balks, killing the person with kisses and fleeing from them.

I definitely didn't interpret this line as depicting abuse: "Struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that." If you look back, the subject is that line is *happiness* - so she's being struck with happiness by someone who should know that she doesn't want to be happy, AKA her new love interest.

"Leave all your longing, your loving behind" - in order to finally be happy, this girl must forget the things that made her so reluctant to reach that state. Otherwise, she won't survive in her new life.

The chorus is encouraging the girl to finally be happy, to forget her stagnation and run with the horses. Her family, who has watched her suffer, wants her to succeed, or perhaps they are a further source of happiness for her which she must reach.

I love it and don't find it morbid at all. It's something we can all relate to. Awesome :)

Franz Ferdinand – Lucid Dreams Lyrics 17 years ago
For those of you who don't know what a lucid dream is, it's basically when you realize you're dreaming /in/ your dream (e.g. you suddenly start wondering why you're wearing nothing but underwear to work), and start to the control the dream as your conscious self (doing stuff like flying, breathing underwater, or just struggling to remain conscious). Google it, it's a pretty cool concept.

Since I think lucid dreams are awesome, I'm inclined to think that this (amazing) song is talking about them literally - "shortwave streams" could refer to brain activity during REM sleep, "I skate around the world tonight" could be talking about all the adventures this guy is having as he dreams. "I woke with wings from lucid dreams" - for anyone who's ever experienced a real, vivid lucid dream, the power you have to do absolutely anything you want in this universe your mind has created is really like having a pair of wings.

"Oh, so why don't you meet me there" - there's stories of people meeting up during their simultaneous dreams... I don't believe that but what the hell.

Of course it could also just be a metaphor for the dream of love and truth, blah, blah, blah. My theory's more exciting :D
