| Jeff Buckley – Grace Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I agree with the general consensus here, but I think it goes a little deeper. Being a larger-than-life... almost a spirit guide for a lot of us younger guys, I think he must have been a little lonely "up there." He was, I feel, beyond the normal realm of people and saw things on a different wavelength, saw things in a different light, and since there an element of love in the song, it's almost as if he is describing his struggle to drag his love up to his level, though she is caught up in the fear that most of us are stuck in. There is only a hint of this in the song, but I hear it in the lyrics: "But she cries to the clicking of time" "And she weeps on my arm Walking to the bright lights in sorrow Oh drink a bit of wine we both might go tomorrow" and "It reminds me of the pain I might leave Leave behind" |

| Jeff Buckley – Witches' Rave Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I believe this song is about being under a woman's spell where you have almost gone mad about it, like you can't think about anything and you have all this sexual motivation and drive... But this particular girl knew what she had over him. She used it! That's what I sing about whenever I play it live. The man himself had this to say about his song when he played it live at Arlene's Grocery, "This one is called witches rave. About a spell that was cast over me one day; I loved it as much as I hated it. I couldn't make it go away, and it probably never will... so maybe this'll help things along, Shall we? One, two, three, four..." Shit, the lyrics are so fucking phenomenal. He was in a league of his own... |

First off, why are you yelling? ----- As a side note, Krist Novoselic referred to this song as Kurt's Magnum opus; he had so many versions, because he could not make the song exactly the way he wanted it. My favorite version is the one found on Sliver: The Best of the Son. |

I'm a big fan of both bands, but I think the Nirvana version is better. I have a preference for heavier music, but both versions are good, listen to both! If you like the Vaselines, both artists went on to launch solo careers. Eugene Kelly was in another band, too, called Eugenius. Musically it was more mainstream (not really a bad thing), but to quote Eugene himself, "The lyrics were shite." I still recommend checking it out. King_nothing, yes it's two chords, but a song doesn't have to be intricate to be good. If you like any Nirvana song at all, then know that it's probably just 3 or 4 power chords, the simplest thing you can do with a guitar. The songs are still amazing, though. "Love Me Do" by the Beatles was three chords. "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac was only 3 chords with a 4th thrown in very occasionally. It's not even difficult chords- they're major chords in both cases. Do you like Johnny Cash? Those are simple. "Brown-Eyed Girl" by van Morrison? Mostly 3 chords. "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd (sp?) is three chords. Heck, "Stairway to Heaven" is most arpeggiated major and minor chords! I could go on and on. |

| Nirvana – All Apologies Lyrics | 18 years ago |

(cont.) What else should I be All apologies-- He has accomplished everything. What else should I say Everyone is gay-- He was always patronizing people throughout his life, I think he was frustrated that nobody listened. What else could I write I don't have the right-- who is he to try to sway these people of call himself better? What else should I be All apologies-- same line as the first, different meaning... he is no savior, he never wanted to be, he is moving on. In the sun In the sun I feel as one In the sun In the sun I'm married buried-- married/buried: why does that have to be about Courtney? He can appreciate nature, simple beauty; that's how he wants it to end. I wish I was like you Easily amused-- basically laughing at the cliche human life. Find my nest of salt-- marriage is a basic part of every life, he is comparing it to animalistic mating rituals, saying we are the same... but there is no life in that (salt keeps life from occurring) Everything is my fault I'll take all the blame Aqua seafoam shame-- ah, finally we agree. "I did more harm than good trying to preach my message... oops." Sunburn with freezerburn-- so we ruin 'being in the sun' Choking on the ashes of her enemy-- humans= petty All in all is all we are (x14)-- find a girl, settle down, shit happens, then you die. |

Kurt Cobain was self-actualized. This song is about being self-actualized. I don't think this was about any of the petty shit that people have brought up over and over... I see Kurt as above that. What this song is about is doing everything there is to do, realizing everything there is to realize, and not wanting to be part of the petty human existence. He spread his message, then got the hell out of here. Whether he killed himself or not, I think he would have. |

| Nirvana – Plateau Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Going with IntotheAshes on this one, but with a little twist- the plateaus represent the stages of Maslo's pyramid, on the steps to self-actualization, and how people foolishly try to satisfy each step to become self-actualized... something to be proud of, to gloat about... which means they're missing the point entirely. It's like they see happiness in life as a competition. The Meatpuppets do a great job of mocking these people with serene music throughout the song, as if they are amused. P.S.- If you are stupid, or you think every song is about your drug of choice, or you have nothing new to say, or you think we look into the lyrics too much... what the hell are you doing here? |

Is anybody familiar with Maslo's pyramid of Self-Actualization? I think this is about Cobain reaching his maximum potential, and being ready to move on from that. Kurt Cobain was the most self-actualized person I have ever heard of. Agh, if it wasn't 2am, I could do a better job at explaining my case. |

| Nirvana – Clean Up Before She Comes Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I know you want to talk about this song but if you have nothing new to add, don't waste a post. If there gets to be too many, people wont read the gems in the middle, like this one: Clean up before she comes could refer to 'cleaning up' after sex, especially since men are notorious for cumming first. Have sex, clean up in the bathroom, come back to a disappointed girl. More generally, it refers to the monotony of adult life, like this is how it always happens, and Kurt doesn't like being an adult... But it happens anyway. I'm starting to eat my vegetables. Clean up the dusty town, his world that has become unmoving with monotony. Unmoving collects dust. And finally, I think that I'm getting older. Said in a tone that is slightly eerie the first time you hear it. This whole thing was spawned by the haunting last line, which is sung with a note of bitter, world-weary resent. The voice shakes a little bit as acceptance sets in. |

| Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This isn't about going to heaven at all. This is about the time we do have to live, think, breathe, enjoy. I think the idea of an afterlife is the problem in this song, that people spend every Sunday of their lives for something that may not even exist, when they could be appreciating what they have. Take the good with the bad, learn, grow, and most importantly, don't thank god for it all. Just be thankful. Now I'm going to dissect the lyrics, you can skip this part and take my word for it: "There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold And she's buying a stairway to heaven." Meaning that it’s not enough that it's beautiful, she wants more than she sees. "When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed With a word she can get what she came for." Reference to when she dies- when she gets there, she can repent and she will get heaven when everyone else gets hell. “Amen” "There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure 'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings. In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings, Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven." The Church says its so, but eventually, no matter who you are, there will be doubt. You see the songbird by the brook, and find that you're kinda fond of what you have on earth. Paradise is already here. Maybe a thousand years of tradition was just a bunch of tortured/persecuted Christians who didn't think that boiling in a cauldron was good enough. “There's a feeling I get when I look to the west, And my spirit is crying for leaving. In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees, And the voices of those who standing looking.” Spirit wants to enjoy the world. Sitting with a bunch of people who never question isn’t enough anymore. The last part of that is about the people who appreciate nature. “And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune Then the piper will lead us to reason. And a new day will dawn for those who stand long And the forests will echo with laughter.” When people start to realize this, we will be reasonable, throw off this dream of heaven, and the unknown wont be a problem anymore. Help me out here: “For those who stand long”- who’s that? “If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, It's just a spring clean for the May queen. Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run There's still time to change the road you're on.” Don’t worry about the bad things in life, like a period in this case, take them in stride and see what good things come out of it. Two paths= wasted life and appreciative life. “Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know, The piper's calling you to join him, Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.” You ignore your doubt, but it persists… you can join the world, accept it as the best we get… whispering wind is akin to Paradise on Earth. “And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul. There walks a lady we all know Who shines white light and wants to show How everything still turns to gold. And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last. When all are one and one is all To be a rock and not to roll.” As we approach the end, we see that the world was beautiful all along, but it’s too late to go back and enjoy it. We get old. So…: “And she's buying a stairway to heaven.” She still hopes that faith in God will get her more time, another paradise. |

| Nirvana – Marigold Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I have another interpretation that came to me as I have become more aware of the world, but I don't feel like typing it here. Here's a hint, maybe someone will take this and run with it. Marigolds are beautiful flowers, but they are seen as weeds that smell. They are not the flowers of love, they are not flowers of hope. Just weeds that come back every year. |
|
| Nirvana – Marigold Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Marigolds are golden flowers (important) that are found in nature (important). Man seeks money, power (gold). Natural instincts are the things that authority has to repress. (Don't worry, this will all come together). Pictures can either give us a path to the past, or (in this case, I think) a view of want we want but don't have (like a girl (but not specific to this song)). Six colored pictures in a row are all of the different ways we can see what we want, like vices. They are not identical, but they are pictures of man's natural gold- women/men, power, etc. We see them, and feel that they are within our grasp. Oh yeah, the clock goes slow, because when we don't have, we spend our time wanting. That's what 'he' is for. Without him, we take those pictures and run. |

I like both possibilities. The musical message is an interesting take on it. I think I agree with you. 'My Sandbox!' |

NirvanaStan, you have to put it together with the lyric before it: "And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul." It's just an elaboration of the original lyric. It isn't dull- it's a clever way of depicting old age. But I can see where you would get the idea- the shadow (like our bad side or the materialistic devil in us) is bigger or dominant over our soul, which can be pure, but is corrupted. Maybe the last verse is saying that we can't overcome our evil temptations, despite the pleading of Jesus to do otherwise. This is further supported by the last line. And that's NOT a song of hope. |

Don't be so close-minded. I think Dave's response was great, it definitely made me look at the song differently, although the last line might be a little deeper- "To be a rock and not to roll" ... Be a rock- be solid, unmoving. In this case, in your morals and values. And not to roll- not being misguided, don't return to the wrong path. |
