I'm surprised nobody's commented yet - even though this song is certainly cryptic (drugs, maybe?), it's the kind of song you can listen to on repeat for a long time because it's so good melodically (Like "Look Up" by Stars, another song I could listen to forever). The first two lines are also really powerful, and can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people - for me, with college graduation coming up, it's sort of a mantra about dealing with change and getting ready to face the world. |

| Stars – Your Ex-Lover Is Dead Lyrics

This song is so amazing. The lyrics perfectly capture that weird, poignant mixture of regret, awkwardness, and surprise when you see that person who left you long ago - that warm and shocking realization that time really does heal all wounds, giving you the courage to let them know that even though something went wrong (you were hurt, or he just fell out of love), you really are fine in a way you never thought you would be. It's that feeling of looking inside yourself to see where the pain was and finding it empty. |

So beautiful. I always thought she was singing, "You will always be loved," but I like the real words too - it makes the video make more sense, as well. For me, this song is a call to let your guard down and trust that all will well in time - but the vocals and instrumentation are so gorgeous, you can also listen to it without even trying to think about what it means. |

This is such a beautiful song - I listen to the final three songs on "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" together on repeat. I absolutely agree with littlelindsayy that it's about the peace that comes before death, knowing that you have lived a good life. I think that "Relation, now, means nothing," might be talking about the idea that good and evil can be relative or subjective - instead, she has chosen her way of life and thought it good ("Having chosen, so defined"). |

| Okkervil River – A Girl In Port Lyrics

What I love about this song the most are the portraits of each of the girls in the verses - impressionistic but with enough detail to set each apart and make them seem real. I agree that it's probably a metaphor for a touring musician, but, ultimately, it doesn't matter - what's important and memorable about this song is the mixture gentle regret, honesty and hollowness that comes across. |

| Paul Westerberg – Got You Down Lyrics

This song reminds me of the last guy I dated - I ultimately couldn't stand him, but he would say eerily incisive things about me and knew just how to make me angry (or happy). I think that, in this song, it's about a girl processing the end of a relationship with a guy like this - he's "got her down" in the sense that he knows her really well, and in the sense that, even though she's probably better off without him, she misses being with him. |

I mostly agree, but I think that the girl is sleeping around less for reputation and more because she's looking for a thrill or some kind of meaning that her they ultimately don't provide. It seems like she was sort of naive or too trusting (the men are the ones "with a plan" in this song), hoping that the sex would lead to something more, and she doesn't understand why she ends up so hurt and alone. But damn, this is catchy. |

Indeed. Surprised that there are so few comments on this though - it's a great song. I think it's supposed to be about the speaker being in love with a girl who turned him down because she's hung up on a guy who doesn't love her back. |

This is such a great song - perfectly captures that feeling of being young and in a new relationship. There's that uncertainty about the real world and just wanting to escape by being with that other person all the time, while in the back of your head, you know it can't stay this way forever. |

I love this song - I completely agree with everyone about how beautiful it is. It's my favorite thing to listen to when I take a red-eye flight back East and land just as the sun is rising. |

| Elliott Smith – Twilight (Somebody's Baby) Lyrics

Gorgeous - reminds me of all those shades of reasons for things just not working out, and he does it so subtly in such an amazing song.
"Because your candle burns too bright
Well, I almost forgot it was twilight"
It's like he forgets himself because he's so drawn to her, he lets himself pretend it'll all be okay for just a little bit. |

I agree with cileskot - this is such a beautiful song, and the phrase "give it all away" could be interpreted any number of ways. One of my favorites of all time. |

So, uh, I don't really feel like bitching about the relative merits of Heatmiser, JEW or Straylight Run, but I've always thought that this song is about the singer and a friend becoming estranged over the friend's drug use ("He was a sucker for your double dose" and "A head that just takes up space"). Also, Elliott Smith did a gorgeous acoustic version of this solo on the "New Moon" compilation of his unreleased stuff. Soooo good. |

| The Decemberists – Shanty for the Arethusa Lyrics

I looked up "Arethusa," and the HMS Arethusa was a frigate ship in the Royal Navy in the 18th Century, captured from the French in 1759. Yay Wikipedia! I'd imagine that's what all of the sailing references mean. |
