wow this song is so beautiful! just the depth of the words and the way that he sings them, I love it! ok so now that I sound like a dumbass cause everyone else has said it's so self-explanatory.. is this song partially about smoking?: "Watching it burn to your fingertips All of the ashtrays.. Damaged by habits that haunt you" well anyways..Idk if it is, sure sounds like it but don't know how it all ties together.. anyone? |

I see it as the couple is broken up/about to break up for some outside reason, meaning they want to be together but can't because of something that is not their choice or in their control in the first verse, he wakes up with her and is wondering why he's there, sleeping with her, when they are no longer together or about to end their relationship. and the chorus "it's ok that we're dying, but I need to survive tonight" it's like they know they have to end it so they want one more night together which carries on in "And you touch my hand ever so slightly... (Girl, we're not ready for this yet.) And the deadly look she cast upon me... (I won't regret, I won't regret, I won't regret. I won't regret...)" they are going to be together for one last time even though it's going to make it harder to end it and the whole part about him "trying to disappear.." it's like they are too attached to one another to really put an end to what they have so they are putting it off til later "one day you and I.." sad sad song, but in a happy way. tragically sweet :) |

I've loved this song all summer and still do, but now that I've left for college it makes me reminisce and cry every time I hear it....but in a good way haha! "paper bags and plastic hearts all are/our belongings in shopping carts" makes me think of buying new things and packing up to leave "it's goodbye but we got one more night let's get drunk...it's so good to be by your side we'll cry...we'll feel so alive" it's like one last time to party and have fun and you're sad because you're leaving so you cherish the moment "make peace with an empty town" is like you're finally realizing that you don't hate this place as much as you thought you did now that you have to leave and it's empty because everyone is leaving or has already left "throw it away forget yesterday we'll make the great escape we won't hear a word they say they don't know us anyway watch it burn let it die cause we are finally free tonight" it's celebrating that you're finally on your own and free from your old reputation/parents/highschool and whatever else and escaping to start a new life and the "wasted time...hours that were left behind" makes me think of looking back over the summer and regretting not spending more time together and the fact that summer flew by so quickly to me it pretty much sums up to being torn between leaving the old and starting a new life and looking forward to the future while still remembering the ones you spent your summer with I think it's the perfect anthem for friends and summer and college! |
