I'm pretty sure Newo Ikkin is Claudio's lover...not the one who follows him around.

Could you be thinking of Ambellina?

It took me a long time to get used to this song.
I love the album, but this one was just..ergh.

Now that I listen to it, I think it's fascinating.

The meaning -though I've looked it up on Cobalt & Calcium,
and know what was basically intended -is mixed.

I think it's interesting, the references they make.

"Still searching for your face,
The arm that killed the president." - Am I the only one who thinks of the Kennedy assassination on this one?

And this.
"Still searching for your face,
In the crowd that buried New Mexico." - It's as if they're saying they're looking for the one person, in the thousands that have mindlessly flocked to Roswell for "alien UFO sightings" that actually knows the truth.

Not what's intended, but...
Just little things like that.
I find it fascinating.

First off, I believe the "I, robot" line is truly "IRO-bot"...which, if I've followed this accurately, Coheed/Cambria are.

While I've read on cobaltandcalcium.com that this is supposed to be the "setting of the scene" of their battle and this focuses primarily on Jesse and the subplot of Chase and Sizer, but I've listened to it many times and my own personal interpretation is as follows.

Take it or leave it.
It's just an opinion.

Alright, first off, I feel it's primarily from Claudio's view, seeing as he is the only one of the children apparently left alive at the time...and it could be directed at either Newo (his lover) or Coheed and Cambria, his "parents".

It seems to me that he's begging, pleading and almost even willing to fight for a sort of recognition...and acknowledgement..a compliment from either of the two parties mentioned.

He's saying up-front that he will do anything, even kill, just to hear them say their proud of him or tell him that they love him.
He wants to show them the respect they deserve, and show that he's the only one left who remembers them.
(IE: "children sit and mourn the graves of those they've never seen before")
And he wants to -in a way- avenge them and is prepared to do whatever necessary.
But should he fail, he's pleading for a place amongst them in death.

Crap, Josheppardfan831 beat me to it.

cobaltandcalcium.com

Utilize the website for all your CoCa lyric needs...Really, it gives a song-by-song layout of what every track is depicting in the saga.

And yes, it's about Ambellina (not Newo) and I really don't think anyone gets raped.
Al's just a psychotic, racist murderer and is actually more..er..involved with his sniper rifle than anything or anyone else.

Blue October – H.R.S.A. Lyrics 17 years ago
HRSA? I didn't know that stood for "High Risk of Self Abuse" o.O I always thought it was just a nursing program.

Either way, that would make perfect sense in this scenario.

Basically, from the sound of things, he's been committed to a mental hospital, and he's hating it. He's witnessing the people there, such as his roommate, and realizing how alone they truly are in there; how miserable he is, and that in order to escape it, he's going to have to get himself on-track again, and keep himself under control (Hence the line about lying about his self-abusive nature, and the "I won't cry over anything at all"..) If he does that, he'll leave sooner.

Another side-note, the "walk into group for the show" makes me think of those old-time stories of doctors taking mental patients and doing "operations" on them to "cure them" in front of a group of on-lookers, and in this context, it's as if he's reminding the viewers to remember who these people are, and that some may only be there because they've been wronged, or had their "boundaries" breached.

The Who – Gettin' in Tune Lyrics 18 years ago
The line "gettin' in tune to the straight and narrow" seems to give me the general impression (along with the other interpretations previously mentioned) that he's "tuning in" on a better life, a life of good values and habits; leaving his old "bad self" behind and -with the help of someone (a lover/friend perhaps?)- he's "getting in tune" to coming clean (in every sense of the term).

Styx – Show Me The Way Lyrics 18 years ago
This is mainly about him realizing the world's negative condition, and asking for someone to "show [him] the way" to improve it, and to keep from becoming mixed up in the negativity and hatred. He's asking to be purified, in a sense, and granted the strength to withstand each wrong the world will deal him, and he seems to be praying for the sake *of* the world and its people, in order to make life better and to stop the violence/hatred that's taken over.

Imogen Heap – The Walk Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is absolutely amazing. And I love the message behind it..I can definitely relate a bit -too- well to it (as someone said earlier) in that it deals with her being in a relationship with one man, yet having increasingly strong feelings for another. She's having to deal with this, and having to try and fight the temptation of messing around with the other, in order to avoid an affair, and to avoid cheating on her actual partner.

It goes through her saying how mixed up she is (twisting beside myself) to trying to fight the attraction she has towards this other man, who keeps pushing it and getting close -a bit too close- (you're as close as it gets without touching me) to the point where she's at her worst (No response on any level, Red-Alert: This vessel's under seige, total overload: all systems down ((They've got control)) ) and she's giving up and giving in to it (give in, and give in, and relish every minute of it).

Creed – One Last Breath Lyrics 18 years ago
I've always gone with the suicide idea, too. o.O Just seems like he's at the end of his rope, and standing on the edge, contemplating the situation, and reassuring himself that it's not "so far down", yet the whole time he seems to be calling for help and wanting someone to stop him. (Basically exactly what T_John said. Nicely put.)

The Receiving End Of Sirens – Venona Lyrics 18 years ago
With all of your references to Romeo & Juliet, an interesting fact about the entire album itself ("Between the Heart and the Synapse" for those who don't know *greatly recommended, by the way..*) there is definitely an obvious reference to this particular play, and specifically William Shakespeare. (The album's front features a drawing *OF* William Shakespeare himself, with his body morphing and changing, coming apart.) So this was apparently intentional for listeners to connect the album's storyline with that particular play. Not too helpful, but an interesting fact. ^_^ (A *lot* of the songs on this album reference Romeo & Juliet in some way or another.)

The Receiving End Of Sirens – Then I Defy You, Stars Lyrics 18 years ago
*another side-note I forgot to mention*

The title supports all of this in that, in truth, the line from Shakespeare's play, "Romeo & Juliet" - "...Then I defy you, stars!" is literally saying that he defys *fate* and defys his destiny, which back then, was supposed to be foretold in the *stars*. Therefore, in this particular song with these lyrics, the subject is defying their own fate, and defying their own destiny -which was to become one of the mindless "mannequins" by whom they're surrounded.

The Receiving End Of Sirens – Then I Defy You, Stars Lyrics 18 years ago
My interpretation is as follows; Take it for what you will. =)

The apparitions tango to the sound of their heels tapping,
A procession of prosthetics limbs and mannequins.

[Everyone seems to be a massive party of identical "robots" or "mannequins" without the will to move/think on their own.]

They’re all perfect models of imperfection,
With a marrow made of cellophane.

[They're made to be "perfect models" of human imperfection.]

Strap on your ballroom best.
Breath in and don’t exhale.

[This basically seems to be an order for someone (particularly a young lady, with the reference to "ballroom best"/"breath in and don't exhale" (corsets (sp?? o.O)) to prepare themselves to become a part of the mindless majority afore-mentioned.]

Oh, Juliet! Oh, Juliet! Deny your name your father.

[Defy the push to conform to their will, fight to prevent becoming one of them at all costs.]

Rearrange the cells that form my skin.
See them through kaleidoscope eyes
Because everybody feigns sometimes.

[This could be a plea for someone to see them as they really are: human. They wish to be seen completely and honestly, encompassing even their worst flaws ("because everybody feigns sometimes"), because in order to be human, one has to make mistakes..since perfection is truly non-existant.]

Blur your eyes,
Romeo.
Bend the line
Romeo
Do you like what you see!

[Another plea to defy the conformity and to see them as what they really are..They're asking the other if they like what they're seeing in them; their honest, imperfect self]

Oh Romeo
Where are thou?
I’ve dressed up this canvas skin’ painted something colorful just for you.

[They're asking for them to "come and see" their creation, the work of art they've made themselves to be. They've taken their "canvas skin" (unoriginal, blank self/personality) and "dressed it up", making it "colorful just for [them]"..they've made themselves an individual.]

Self-inflicted surgery is now routine.
It erases all traces of faces we have all known; we have all owned.
Stretch me over this
Two by four skeleton

[Here's where the twist of the song seems to come in..They go from becoming an individual and wishing for everyone to see them as such, to -in a sense- observing how everything seems to be going. Everyone around them is performing "self-inflicted surgery" (changing who they are and erasing what they've been to become part of the *accepted* majority) and the last lines "Stretch me over this, two-by-four skeleton" seems to say that they're realizing they're doing the same thing and becoming a part of the crowd.. ((Or perhaps they're stretching their *new* individual "skin" over themselves and in turn becoming unique.)) - Could go either way.]

Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody Lyrics 18 years ago
This is definitely about his discovering he had AIDS.
The first few lines,
"Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide
No escape from reality"
supports this in that he's struggling to decide if it's real, seeing as it's so mentally shocking that he feels it can't be..but realizes it is and that there is no escape from the reality of it.

And then of course, the nearly direct reference *to* AIDS, in the lines
"Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine
Body's aching all the time
Goodbye, everybody
I've got to go
Got to leave you all behind and face the truth"
is pretty obvious, too. The line "Body's aching all the time" probably refers to the actual physica effects of AIDS. And he's "leaving [them] all behind and fac[ing] the truth" in that he realizes it's inevitable and he's going to have face it, and leave his loved ones behind.

If you think about it, honestly, this song is actually incredibly depressing.. He's basically giving up on life and saying that now that he knows this, "nothing really matters" to him anymore and he's stopped caring for anything and anyone all together because he knows he's destined to die from it. Great song, and the rhythm wouldn't lead one to that conclusion, but in getting down to brass tacks, that seems to be the underlying message. Makes a lot of sense.

Bowling for Soup – Ridiculous Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this has a lot to do with life and the mistakes people make..the quick turns life throws at you.

I think he's singing about being in a perfect world, a world of happiness and one in which everything's going fine, and everyone's "holding hands" and "dancing" around in a circle (with the reference to "pocket full of posies", signifying the "Ashes, Ashes" dance kids always do..) and then all of a sudden, someone slips up and the whole group or relationship "falls down" or collapses. And the rest of the song seems to encompass the process of getting back up, recovering from that blow, or that fall.

He sings "We all fall down" meaning everyone does it, each day, people slip up and say the wrong thing and then have to make up for it, and deal with the consequences somehow. And the next line "down on the inside/pretty on the outside" deals with the cover that people use when this is happening. For instance, someone's hurt or "down on the inside" but they'll put on a front to make sure no one knows..a front that's "pretty" and deceptive.

( First off, to you "haters" *No, I'm not certified to be "gangsta'"* if you're going to insult someone, you may want to check your spelling.. )

Secondly, this song is quite obviously about conforming, as many of you have touched on..It's dealing with the world and its population being "manufactured" to a specific template; created to look, think, and act a certain way, and each one is "truly empty down inside" without a single individual thought.. and he's stating that he's been made to be one of them, but something's malfunctioning ("somebody call the maker, I'm coming apart at the seams") and he's breaking away from that conformity, and breaking down, becoming an individual. He's escaping, or "Fleeing The Factory" ^_~

On the part where he sings
"Don't you believe that you've been decieved[...]" he's not asking a question..he's telling them *not* to believe that they've been decieved or lied to, and *not* to believe that they're "no better than" something or someone. So it's more of a command, telling them they haven't been, and that they aren't lower or worse than whatever they've compared themselves to..

"Don't you believe, that you've been decieved; that you're no better than..."

Anberlin – Dismantle. Repair. Lyrics 18 years ago
All of your interpretations are great, religious or not. I for one have thought of both, but for now, I'll explain more on my interpretation of the non-religious side of it, since several of you have done a great job with that thus far.

To me, this song could be about a personal relationship with a lover, or an ex-lover.. He's singing about how it's so easy for them to to tear him apart, or dismantle him, but all the while he needs them there in order to build him up, or repair him again. They hurt him, but make him whole again.

He's thought in the past that he should escape her ("I've tried to escape you, but the orchestra plays on") and the problems she causes, but he can't because the memories are all still present in his mind, and he can't "stop the music". He's tried to escape before and failed, because she's come back and told him that things are going to change, things are going to get better. And all the while, he's been blind enough to stay and let it keep happening. He loves her, and needs her and it's hard to leave, yet hard to stay when she can so easily hurt him. He's tried to make it work, being completely honest with her ("my undivided honesty") but he's realizing slowly that even his honest word means nothing, because she inevitably won't believe him, assuming he'll never be truthful, making him the "Patron Saint of Lost Causes".

So, as the beginning verse of the song seems to state, he's finally escaping and leaving her behind, yet thinking back and his mind's being flooded with the memories of her and their relationship, from start to finish -good to bad.

I agree with candykaos.. I believe this is based on a person who knows they're falling apart; being destroyed from within for whatever reason and they're lost, confused, and frantic to find someone to "attach" themselves to for further support, and to take down with them in their fall.

In this, he compares himself to several very annoying and very stubborn "attachments" of sorts and seems to focus on clinging to the one perfect thing in his life and slowly taking them over and possessing them.

Motion City Soundtrack – Feel Like Rain Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm gonna go with the relationship side of things, because there's really very little that seems to have anything to do with "cutting" oneself..
Basically, how I see it, this song is dealing with a relationship between two people, specifically close friends, that ends up developing into a much closer bond. However, for fear of "losing the game" (losing eachother's friendship completely) they decide to hold one another as what they are now, without risking such a thing, though it pains them to do so.

Geez, you guys.. Calm down. There's nothing wrong with a difference in opinion, so stop getting pissy about it. Some people like it, others don't, and that's not even what this site is for. It's to determine the meaning, not state whether you like it or not.

As far as my interpretation, disregarding my opinion, I believe this song deals with the fact that we go through life, day in and day out, and do the same things or what's considered "normal" of us as we grow up, yet this particular person feels there's no satisfaction in that. He could be surrounded by friends and family and living the life of his dreams yet still feel as if he's standing all alone.

Edgewater – Break Me Out Lyrics 18 years ago
While I'm not sure exactly what the true meaning of this song really is, here are a few of my guesses.
Possibly, he could be talking about a relationship, or a recovery FROM a relationship, rather. He's having a difficult time getting over it while his partner seems to have already overcome it. In a way, he's asking them for help -> "Do you still believe I'll free myself?" / "Won't you just, break me out?"
A second possibility, and this is a little more off-the-wall, but it could possibly be about him overcoming an addiction of some sort. -> "Can't you see, what this sh*t has done to me?" And once again, he could be asking for help in overcoming it because he feels he can't do it alone.
