Placebo – Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush cover) Lyrics 12 years ago
The heart-beat as drum beat in this song is chilling. Wanting to bear the pain of another, running up that hill for them only part of this song. Love in this song, like all love is complicated. There is 'thunder in our hearts' and the first line 'It doesn't hurt me' sounds like one side of an argument ewhere the person protests too much, and they might love the other person but also hurt them deeply with an imbedded bullet of words...

Has anyone heard the stripped down acoustic version of this song? Inspired music with real emotion.

Gavin DeGraw – Meaning Lyrics 16 years ago
I sent this song to a beloved friend who said that "in the end everything is meaningless" - this is my answer to him - love...

The acoustic version give me shivers, and I relive my love for my friend...

Pearl Jam – I Am Mine Lyrics 16 years ago
Possibly the only freedom we have is the freedom within our own heads...

The tears of the world do make oceans, but the line "the full moon is looking for friends at high tide" really resonates after the giant 2004 Tsunami, where so many people were swept to their deaths. Don't deny the sorrow in life - accept it - and LIVE.

Jackson Browne – Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate Lyrics 16 years ago
Maybe it's about death, but to me it's more of a memory and reckoning song, especially the concluding verse "sometimes I lie awake at night and wonder where the years have gone..."

It's looking back, especially in those lonely night hours when the rest of the world is sleeping. Looking back with a mixture of wonder and regret.

Van Morrison – Real Real Gone Lyrics 16 years ago
The quintessential falling-in-love song if I ever heard it. quoting other like minded souls and songs.
I love the lines

And Sam Cooke is on the radio
And the night is full of space
And your fingertips touch my face
You're a friend of mine
And I'm real real gone.

The beauty of evening is part of the attraction...

Paul Kelly – If I Could Start Today Again Lyrics 16 years ago
Lots of obvious biblical imagery in this song, including the line "I know not what I do" a paraphrase of Jesus' words from the cross about his enemies - "forgive them Father for they know not what they do..."

You can only imagine the pain and anguish behind this song - pain that the writer feels, and has caused to someone he loves (I'm not the milk and honey kind, today I proved it true). Betrayal perhaps?

Anyway, the song has that wonderful spare beauty about its accompaniment, and Paul's honest, raw Aussie-bloke voice. Just gorgeous, but so sad...

Oasis – Don't Look Back in Anger Lyrics 16 years ago
Has anyone noticed how the bass line (& some of the chorus) sounds like the classical piece Pachbel's Canon? Sure Noel G has absorbed bits of Lennon, Beatles etc, bit we are ALL the better for it - 'cause he writes brilliant songs with multiple interpretations...

My take? Slip inside the eye of your mind - treat your past with respect, but don't let the anger wreck your soul (slide away).

David Gray – Wisdom Lyrics 16 years ago
Such pain.in this song.... Such beauty...

It's like the continuation of Eva Cassidy's 'Autumn Leaves' (but I miss you most of all in the autumn-when Autumn leaves begin to fall)

The relationship is dead, and he sees its image in the tree 'bones', in the weather, everywhere... He's an animal frozen in the headlights (about to perish?) what good is time then?

Peter Frampton – I'm in You Lyrics 16 years ago
An equally valid interpretation -

He lives and thrives in her honesty and acceptance.
("when I cry you don't laugh" & "you & I don't pretend - we make love") This is contrasted to a previous love who also gave him the love he never had. This love is real, 'cause she KNOWS him, in every sense...

Peter Frampton – I'm in You Lyrics 16 years ago
Beautiful - long live simple love songs!

Or is it?

He seems to go back and forth in time -
"I'm ,IN you" would seem to be about a Current r/s but

"she GAVE me the love", and
"You con die but remain you and I"

seem to indicate that his loved one has died, but the love lives on for him. Interesting that the song finishes with "I don't care where I go..." His tears go on, she can't mock from the grave...

Eva Cassidy – The Water is Wide Lyrics 16 years ago
I still think the line is:

"but not so deep as my love for him
I know not if I sink or swim"

The whole song is just beautiful...

If there is one song I wish I'd written, it's this one...When depression lays me low or homesickness overwhelms me I'm reminded "It's just a moment, this time will pass..." It's also great to know that there are lots of others like me out there - who love this song & take comfort from it. Blessings...

Billy Joel – Summer, Highland Falls Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't see this song as depressing - more realistic - at least to my experience of life. I do seem to be a sadness or euphoria kind-of-person myself, no inbetweens. Also arguing & compromise come with the territory of love...

The piano part is almost classically styled isn't it? Billy's piano has its own voice. A classic, timeless song...

I'm an Aussie living in the U.S, and this song brings back everything I love about Melbourne & Australia. It's such an optimistic song, full of life... In his memories, he doesn't hear a sound or touch the ground - but his joy keeps flooding back.

David Bowie – Heroes Lyrics 16 years ago
Fishy, I too was sent this song by someone I loved. The clues are in the lines "just for one day" & "better not stay". We couldn't be together, as our other entrenched lives & loves made it impossible - we are 'heroes' to each other, but fate is against us. Maybe he is going the way of safety - not risk; but in his dreams you are lovers for good or bad "forever and ever"? My heart is heavy, but this song still brings me joy...I wish for YOU great love, happiness & perception...

The Rolling Stones – Angie Lyrics 16 years ago
It's about an intense relationship, so passionate (everywhere I look I see your eyes); but totally untenable in the eyes of the world, this hidden relationship would never work out in real life.(thus the comments about money in our coats) He WANTS it to work, he really does...and even in its ending it brings a bittersweet joy (aint it good to be alive?)

Eva Cassidy – The Water is Wide Lyrics 16 years ago
Umm, have you got the lyrics correct? Isn't it:

But love grows old then waxes Cold &
But not do deep as my love for Him ???

Beautiful and heartfelt nevertheless...It's the simplicity that gets to me - a voice and a guitar. Eva could let the emotion & power in her voice loose if she wanted (listen to the final chorus) but she chose restraint and spareness instead. Just perfect...

Colin Hay – Beautiful World Lyrics 16 years ago
I adore this song - there is so much joy to be had in living in the moment, tasting the small happinesses that life has to offer. And maybe they are't so small after all? I'm a Christian and the `God bits' had me bothered at first - but the emptiness we all feel at times can be filled... Surely we were given beauty to make the uglier truths of life bearable? And I think even God feels anger & pain when he sees how we humans stuff up our relationships & our planet... How is it that so much deep stuff is contained in such an sweet song -genius... Thanks Colin!

Syntax – Pride Lyrics 16 years ago
The pivotal line in this fabulous song seem to me
"Give up on your pride, the moment's gone
Give up on your smile, life is long"

but I don't see these thouthts in a depressing or negative light. Letting go of the past (pride) and the need to always be happy no matter what (smile) is freeing... To know who you are does involve change and sometimes reinvention.

On a lighter note - I can't listen to this song and sit or stand still...A Deep song that also makes you dance! - How good is that?

Oasis – Stop Crying Your Heart Out Lyrics 16 years ago
Has anyone noticed the similarities to Jet's 'Shine on"? Certainly there is the admonition "don't cry", and similar subject matter (sadness, life after death, memories of loved ones)... But also they both have that echoing-sounding chorus, and grandness about them.

This song comforts me as a stranger in a strange land - I'm a long way from loved ones. I will see them some day, and our loved ones shine for us in hearts and memories forever...
