I can't believe no one has commented on this one! This is one of my favourite DtR songs - if not for its simplicity but for the fact it says so much by saying so little. In one of the interviews Pete did, he mentions how this was about a failing relationship. He's quite specific about how it's not failing because of the actual relationship itself, but because of obstacles related to the relationship (I'm guessing that it's a long-distance thing). Basically, he indicates the song is about a long distance relationship that is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain - but that the distance is how the relationship came about in the first place "but the phrygian lion / with his excellent eyesight / is what makes it our love" (that is to say - the love we have for one another is what it is is because of how we came to be.) It's a beautiful, beautiful song, about how sometimes the obstacles of love are both the cause and the downfall of the relationship, and how sometimes love just isn't enough. Perfect, really. |

| this song... it toes that line between complete and total love and pure vehement hate. it's hard to tell whether he loves her or hates her. but i suppose the two go hand in hand. | |

| i was introduced to this song by a very dear friend. it took me days to listen to it but when i finally did i had an interesting conversation with him about it. i don't remember exactly but it had something to do with religious imagery and the connections between death and fear and what it is to believe and not believe. i wish i could remember what he said, because it really crystallized it nicely. :/ | |

| i think this is about a couple who are already in a relationship, and he cheats on her (you don't care what affair still haunts me) but she still finds herself loving him, regardless of the shit he puts her through. | |

| I had always assumed this song was a mother singing to her baby "new born eyes"... | |
