Snow Patrol – You Could Be Happy Lyrics 16 years ago
Everything to say about the song has already been said, and the song does speak for itself.

This song makes you think about the people who are important to you but may not love you back, but it also makes you think about the people whom you are important to. Think about that.

Snow Patrol – You're All I Have Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, the meaning is fairly obvious - she's all he has. He'd give up anything else for her, and as he has no alternatives in his mind to being with her, it would torture him to much to fear the relationship won't work, so he just ignores his fears and presses on with the relationship.

Beatiful song, but not quite as good as Chasing Cars in my opinion.

This could have so many meanings, but I think of it as a beautiful goodbye to someone you loved.

His wait for her is almost over, and as he goes to meet her, he hopes she'll love him as much as he loves her.

Snow Patrol – Make This Go On Forever Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is definitely about true love which was only one-sided. She feels like she isn't getting something she needs from him, so she moves on, but even if he can't show it, he knows he loves her far beyond anything else.

"Please don't let this turn into something it's not
I can only give you everything I've got
I can't be as sorry as you think I should
But I still love you more than anyone else could"

Basically what I said above, and the idea that he did something to hurt her but he doesn't fully regret it. Either that, or he just can't apologize for loving her so much.

"All that I keep thinking throughout this whole flight
Is 'it could take my whole damn life to make this right'
This splintered mast I'm holding on won't save me long
Because I know fine well that what I did was wrong"

He sees she's going to end the relationship, but he keeps hanging on to the sinking ship.

"The last girl in the last reason to make this last for as long as I could
First kiss and the first time that I felt connected to anything
The weight of water, the way you taught me to look past everything I had ever learned
The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love"

She was his last hope - and perhaps his first love (from a long time ago). She changed him, but then she left him, and now he's saddened and hasn't a clue what to do without her.

"We have got through so much worse than this before
What's so different this time that you can't ignore?
You say it is much more than just my last mistake
And we should spend some time apart for both our sakes"

He keeps begging for another chance, but she's done with him. She tries to be kind about the break-up, but the "kind words" perhaps hurt him even more. He knows the "time apart" is meant to mean "forever."

"The last girl in the last reason to make this last for as long as I could
First kiss and the first time that I felt connected to anything
The weight of water, the way you taught me to look past everything I had ever learned
The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love

The last girl in the last reason to make this last for as long as I could
First kiss and the first time that I felt connected to anything
The weight of water, the way you taught me to look past everything I had ever learned
The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love"

same as above, repeated to show emphasis as he breaks down

"And I don't know where to look
My words just break and melt
Please just save me from this darkness
Please just save me from this darkness"

Pretty straightforward. He knows for certain now that the relationship is over, but he has nothing to look forward to in his life anymore. He's just an empty shell who wants to give up on love but unfortunately cannot.

Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars Lyrics 16 years ago
My favorite song.
In short, as many have pointed out, it's about wanting to escape your sucky everyday life and just be with the one you truly love.

"We'll do it all, everything, on our own.
We don't need anything, or anyone."

This might actually be sarcastic. He's going through his life okay, but he knows he's always a step away from crashing, so he mocks the idea that he'd be fine even without the person he's singing to.

"If I lay here, if I just lay here
Would you lie with me, and just forget the world."

Sick of going through his normal life without her, he just wants to lie down beside her and forget it all.. nothing else in the world is important relative to the one he loves.

"I don't quite know how to say how I feel
Those three words, are said too much, they're not enough."

Of course, the "3 words" are "I love you." But he feels that the word love has been so over used (either by him or by society) that it's no longer a proper description of how he feels. This love is so much stronger than everything else.

"If I lay here, if I just lay here
Would you lie with me, and just forget the world.
Forget what we're told, before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life."

Again, he wants to ignore society and everything he's "supposed to" do with his life. Instead of live the rest of his days as a slave of society, he wants to start a great new life with the one he loves.

"Let's waste time, chasing cars, around our heads.
I need your grace to remind me, to find my own."

The cars speeding around them represent everyone else moving through their lives. He just wants to live at peace with the one he loves, and they can watch the rest of the world from the outside together.

"If I lay here, if I just lay here
Would you lie with me, and just forget the world.
Forget what we're told, before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life."

same as above, but repeated to add emphasis

"All that I am, all that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see"

His life has no meaning without her.

"I don't know where, confused about how as well
just know that these things will never change for us at all."

He doesn't know where they'll meet again, or how, but he knows he'll always think about her every moment for the rest of his life.

"If I lay here, if I just lay here
Would you lie with me, and just forget the world."

One final plea for her to come to him. I love this part in the (American) video because it shows that he was really just lying alone on his bed and only imagining stopping to lie down everywhere else... always feeling like he can't keep moving through life without her.

Snow Patrol – Set the Fire to the Third Bar Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree strongly with many of the interpretations here, but I upon seeing the video, I noticed something that I don't believe anyone has pointed out. The lights in Lightbody's room turn on first, then the lights in Wainwright's room turn on. Similarly, Lightbody enters his room awhile before Wainwright, and when Wainwright leaves her room at the end and her lights go out, Lightbody remains at the mirror.

The mirror is actually another interesting thing. On Lightbody's side, it's a mirror. He can only see himself. But on Wainwright's side, it's a window. It does kind of make one think of a prison setting, but the prison is metaphorical at best.

These differences between Lightbody and Wainwright which I pointed out may imply that Lightbody is only imagining Wainwright thinking about him while he thinks about her. That would also help explain how the words from both are exactly the same, and why she appears in his room but he does not appear in hers. Of course, the male/female roles could easily be switched for the song itself, but in the video, it's Lightbody thinking about Wainwright (the guy thinking about the girl). The girl may have some feelings for the guy, but his desire for her is much stronger than her desire for him. Again, the roles could be reversed for the song, but the video was only capable of showing it in one way.

So basically the whole thing is him thinking about her and imagining her thinking about him too, even though she may or may not be thinking about him.

Great song.

James Blunt – Same Mistake Lyrics 18 years ago
ok, this is a long one.. line-by-line analysis

I think this is about someone James Blunt once loved deeply (and still does, to a

degree). She does not love him, yet she still wants him to play a minor role in her

life, and James still decides to accept that minor role again and again, even though it

always leaves him wanting more.

"So while I'm turning in my sheets
And once again I cannot sleep"

He's depressed and his mind won't rest.

"Walk out the door and up the street"

He sees no way out of the situation, so he does what he always does (as is evident from

every music video he has).. he walks through the dark night which mirrors his soul.

"Look at the stars beneath my feet"

This can be interpreted in a couple ways. He could be fantacizing about how things could

be, so his dreams bring him above the clouds and beyond the stars.

The more likely interpretation, however, is that everything falls apart around him, and

his night is darker than ever before.

"Remember rights that I did wrong
So here I go"

He regrets many things in his life, but he cannot change them now. He knows that he's

always singing about his loneliness and memories, and he's doing it again.

"Hello, hello"

He calls out for another person, but even if other people are around, no one really sees

him.

"There is no place I cannot go"

This again relates to his dreams. Unfortunately, he knows his dreams would not make him

as happy as his real life being good would make him happy. He walks, but where is he

really walking to?

"My mind is muddy but
My heart is heavy does it show"

His mind may be messed up, but he still knows what he wants in his heart. He wonders how

obvious it is to everyone else that he is so depressed.

"I lose the track that loses me
So here I go"

He can't stay on track with normal things, or rather, normal thoughts aren't meant for

him.

"Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Uhuhuhuhuhuh"

Just random noises of sadness. :)

"And so I sent some men to fight"

He wants to just find a woman that's right for him.

"And one came back at dead of night
Said he'd seen my enemy
Said he looked just like me"

But at the end of the day, he knows that no woman will ever match him. His own

expectations, whether justified or not, cause his loneliness.

"So I set out to cut myself
And here I go"

Another method of pain relief. In addition to that, his actions of talking to those he

wished could love him back is essentially him hurting himself.

"Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Uhuhuhuhuhuh
I’m not calling for a second chance"

He doesn't want another chance to try to be someone he isn't, and moreover, he knows

she'll never dramatically change her opinions on him.

"I'm screaming at the top of my voice"

His entire soul is focused on his deep desire for love, although the outside world may

not be able to see it.

"Give me reason, but don’t give me choice
Cause I'll just make the same mistake again"

He wants a reason not to be able to love her, or at least he wants her to back up her

actions with some logic. He knows that until there is no hope at all left, as poisonous

as hope is, he will keep going back to her and she will keep talking to him occasionally.

"Uhuhuhuhuhuh
And maybe someday we will meet
And maybe talk and not just speak"

Maybe someday he'll talk to her yet again, but this time they'll be able to talk with

each other regularly, instead of just using each other to release their sad stories.

"Dont buy the promises cause
There are no promises I keep"

She does not believe James always tells the truth. More importantly, James has promised

himself things that he has never carried out. The hurts him.

"And my reflection troubles me
So here I go"

He is filled with regret, and sometimes he is even disgusted with himself, or at least

just talking about and listening to his own situations and songs troubles him.

"Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Uhuhuhuhuhuh
I’m not calling for a second chance
I’m screaming at the top of my voice
Give me reason, but don’t give me choice
Cause I'll just make the same mistake
I’m not calling for a second chance
I'm screaming at the top of my voice
Give me reason, but don’t give me choice
Cause I'll just make the same mistake again"

Pretty much the same stuff as before, just restated.

"Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Uhuhuhuhuhuh
So while I'm turning in my sheets
Uhuhuhuhuhuh
And once again I cannot sleep"

He's always thinking about the stuff he talks about in this song.

"Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Walk out the door and up the street"

So he always goes on walks in the cold darkness, and he sings to temporarily relieve the

pain.

"Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Look at the stars
Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Look at the stars falling down"

More and more "lights" in his life disappoint him, and as always, he sees the end coming.

"Uhuhuhuhuhuh
And I wonder where
Uhuhuhuhuhuh
Did I go wrong?"

He makes these mistakes, but when he thinks about it, he would do the same thing over and

over again. If he makes the best decisions he can, then why can't he get what he wants

out of life?

We all know that James's songs have many meanings. I think this song can mean so many

different things, but this combined with all his other songs leads me to believe that the

song is primarily about his maintaining a connection with someone who will not return the

connection to anywhere near the extent desired.

James Blunt – Carry You Home Lyrics 18 years ago
I've only had the pleasure of hearing those songs of his that have music videos, along with a couple others like "Cry" which are on youtube.

I always enjoy analyzing the songs of James Blunt, so I was happy to see a new video up.

It might just be because I haven't sufficiently solved it yet, but this one seems more preplexing than the rest.

One key thing we must determine is whether "you" and "she" are the same person, and if not, then what is their relationship?

I could definitely be a military-related thing, but since this is his second album, I would imagine he wrote this song after he finished his first album. By this point, he was no longer in the military, but this song seems like something he would create for a situation he and/or someone else is currently in.

I don't think this relates to physical disease, aside from possibly drugs (if they count). If the song is about drugs, I'm sure there is also at least one second intended meaning.

James's songs often have many meanings, and I'm sure he makes them with that in mind, but usually there will be one or two ways in which everything weaves together perfectly.

I wish I knew James so I could "check my work" on analyzing the songs. ;)

James Blunt – High Lyrics 18 years ago
Kronika is right. Blunt used to enjoy watching the sunrise at his old home. Although he intended it to allude to deeper meanings and he probably wished it to be about a real relationship, it was just about a sunrise.
"Promise me tomorrow starts with you getting high."
That gave it away more than anything else.

It's really quite funny once you figure out that although the song can "mean" more, that's really all he was talking about, and I'm sure he made the song so people could think and laugh about it in whichever way they see fit.

Just alternate between listening to "High" and "Goodbye My Lover" for an hour, and your emotions will probably go crazy.

James Blunt – Goodbye My Lover Lyrics 18 years ago
Here's what the song means to me. I'm sure this is somewhat similar to what James Blunt meant it to mean, but there are likely also deviations.

"Did I disappoint you or let you down?"
She didn't want someone like him. Although he tried to an extent to make her happy, his personality was ultimately uninteresting to her.

"Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?"
He wonders if he should feel bad for her. On one hand, he broke up with her so he shouldn't act like she wasn't affected. On the other hand, however, he knows he was actually affected more, so he decides just to let others (including mutual friends) think worse of him.

"'Cause I saw the end before we'd begun,"
He knew from the beginning that the relationship (or almost any relationship of his for that matter) could never work out.

"Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won."
He saw that she couldn't know the relationship was doomed, so he went with her and thus the relationship began.

"So I took what's mine by eternal right."
Even though his logic warned against it, he made the choice to start the relationship because he felt compelled to do so for whatever reason.

"Took your soul out into the night."
She soon learned of his depressed and generally detached personality. His life = "the night."

"It may be over but it won't stop there,"
The relationship eventually ends. He continues feeling pain from it, but she doesn't really care about it following the break-up.

"I am here for you if you'd only care."
He'll still do whatever she wants because he still loves her, even though she is not the woman he once thought he knew.

"You touched my heart you touched my soul."
He loved her... duh.

"You changed my life and all my goals."
She lifted him from his depression, and he soon appeared to be a different person.

"And love is blind and that I knew when,"
He knows that women and some men love at random. They have a ladder for "friends" and a ladder for "lovers," and he knows that his friend cannot see why he can and should be both.

"My heart was blinded by you."
Regardless of his logic, he didn't care... he needed a relationship, so he took it anyway.

"I've kissed your lips and held your head."
He's made indications that he loves her.

"Shared your dreams and shared your bed."
They even have a good time together, both physically and psychologically.

"I know you well, I know your smell."
He listens to words and analyzes her actions and thought. He may even know more about her than she does.

"I've been addicted to you."
She is always on his mind, for better or for worse.

"Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me."
He knows he isn't satisfying her in the relationship and that she wants someone else. Although she doesn't have any idea as to what type of person she may love, he knew she was as close as he could get to an ideal lover. She was his best friend, and she was the top of ladder.. and he, unlike her, only has one ladder.

"I am a dreamer but when I wake,"
His mind always drifts in fantasies, but he still has to do the mundane things everyone else does.

"You can't break my spirit - it's my dreams you take."
He's not a very optimistic person, yet he's still plagued by the vain hope that his dreams will come true. Every time he's with her though, there is only the pain of more evidence against the dream.

"And as you move on, remember me,"
He doesn't want to be forgotten.

"Remember us and all we used to be"
He hopes that she'll change her mind and truly love him. He deeply wants to be back in a relationship.

"I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile."
He's known her through her good and bad times.

"I've watched you sleeping for a while."
He idolized and yearned for her.

"I'd be the father of your child."
He wanted to start a family with her.. another easy one.

"I'd spend a lifetime with you."
She is the only one for him, and he would devote the rest of his life to her if she only felt differently about him.

"I know your fears and you know mine."
They know each other very well, and they are familiar with each other's thoughts on various situations.

"We've had our doubts but now we're fine,"
This one's a little hard. I think he may have thrown the end of this statement in hear mainly to continue the rhyming pattern. However, he could be using "fine" in the sense that whenever someone asks you how you are, you generally say you are "fine" regardless how you really feel because it's just easier to do it that way.

"And I love you, I swear that's true."
He loves her, regardless whether or not she sees strong signs of that.

"I cannot live without you."
He truly cannot live with her or without her. He's stuck in a broken state.

"And I still hold your hand in mine."
He still imagines her with him sometimes.

"In mine when I'm asleep."
He has romantic dreams about her because he deeply wishes he could find mutual true love.

"And I will bear my soul in time,"
He'll gain control of his emotions eventually and redirect them internally until (or unless) he finds another small chance at love.

"When I'm kneeling at your feet."
He'll still always have a hole in him from which emotion can spew for her, and he'll still try to be occasional friends with her and help her when he can.

"I'm so hollow, baby, I'm so hollow.
I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow."
This failed relationship combined with all of his past experiences has caused him to believe there is almost no chance he'll ever find true love. This turns him into a shell, and all he can do is think about his inevitably continual depression. He latches onto her even when he knows a relationship will never work.

Of course, the song can be interpreted however it fits one's own situation. I'm sure many songs are even written to mean different things simultaneously and James Blunt probably just compiled his experiences (and perhaps experiences from friends too) to merge some theoretical stories into a song. He is truly brilliant, and I believe he is truly lonely (or at least was). I'm not sure how he could write/sing the song like that if he was not.
