this song can have endless meanings, like most can. but to me, i can relate to the song like sarah tyger and specialk37. i've dealt with two severely suicidal friends the last two years, and it can be so heartbreaking. He will do one of two things: He will admit to everything Or he'll say he's just not the same And you'll begin to wonder why you came ^ that part really gets me, the last line is just that feeling of helpless frustration. the entire chorus could make me cry if i listened to it enough times in a row. great song. i love the fray!!! |

i never actually thought of this song being about a drug problem, but it does make a lot of sense now thati think about it, the coming down from the clouds part. but i agree more with lex3 on the mental problem interpretation. one of my really close friends is bi polar, and its really hard sometimes. so see her go from her ups and downs, "I hear you laughing It makes me cry" ^ so happy, shes finally happy; but confused/hurt at the same time because before she was so depressed "Like the story of life is hello goodbye" ^ its like shes herself one minute (hello) then not the next (goodbye) probably my favorite song by ben harper (who ive just recently discovered, and love even more than jack johnson) |

i think the first verse is just describing the friendship generally; no matter what, the girl (his friend) always could figure out exactly how he felt (found a new beat, in his shoes). when she held him back ,its not that she wasnt letting him leave or something. its just everytime he was with her, she held him to her without her even knowing she was doing it. in the last verse, he's realized they arent that close anymore, and he was too late to realize he was in love with her. i think the "too little again" part means almost, he fell in and out of love with her. denial, maybe? best friends was enough, he lied to himself, then realized he needed more. anyway, great song. too bad for me, really, i can totally relate to this song from the guy's point of view lol |
