The Black Crowes – Sting Me Lyrics 15 years ago
This and "feathers" keep battling in my mind for the title of "Joe's favorite Crowes song"

To this day, I can't listen to it just once. I can't believe this album was recorded in just about a week!

The Black Crowes – Twice As Hard Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm gonna say this song isn't about death or anything drug-related..

I am currently coming out of a relationship where my girl and I split up once already, and this is the 2nd time we're breaking up. I can tell you from experience that this time around is definitely "twice as hard". Actually, its harder, but "25,000 times as hard" isn't quite as singable =)

Maybe Chris isn't doing the breaking up, maybe he's being broken up with:

Clean as a whistle (a clean break)
Smellin' like a rose (as in she "comes out smelling like a rose")
She got no dirty little fingers (her hands are clean)
Bloodshot eyes are gone (she's not crying this time)

Just my humble opinion..

Mike Doughty – Madeleine and Nine Lyrics 15 years ago
Another example of how beautifully Doughty can write a very vivid and rich song about something so elemental.

He's got a crush on this girl. The girl is in a bad relationship. He knows he's the better guy for her, but he is too timid to say anything ("slain by the words i lack..." -- easily one of my top 10 lyrics of all time). Great Song!

Mike Doughty – Unsingable Name Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm with the Python on this one. Doughty is notorious for writing songs about very simple and everyday subjects, in a very complex and rich way. "Sunkeneyed Girl" and "Janine" come to mind.

IMO - this is just a love letter to a girl with a name that either doesn't rhyme with anything, or is (plain and simply) un-singable.

The Doors – Horse Latitudes Lyrics 16 years ago
We actually spent about 2 days on just this poem in a lit. class I had in school. We learned about the horse latitudes as they apply to geography and history and stuff, but then my professor had us look up the word 'horse' in the dictionary and the poem took on a whole new meaning...

'Horse' is a slang term for heroin, which we all know Jim Morrison was no stranger to. When you think about this poem as it relates to heroin, it really makes a lot of sense.

"...the First Animal is jettisoned..." Chilling.

Fountains of Wayne – Sink To The Bottom Lyrics 16 years ago
He's with a girl who is a drag and rather than fight it or break up with her, he's just gonna let her drag him down...

Maybe it gives him an excuse to be apathetic and lazy.

Jaheim – Fabulous Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is still sweet. Jaheim kills me. He's got so much soul, but he's still kind of a thug. What a talent.

Bill Withers – Use Me Lyrics 16 years ago
Man.. this song is about being with a woman who treats you like garbage and everyone around is tellin you to get out. But, what they don't know is that the sweetness is so GOOD to you, that it don't matter how she treats you, as long as she keeps lettin you hit it! Great song!!

Rancid – Radio Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't know if it's punk, I don't know if it's rock, but I'm in love, goddamit! No matter how "mature" my musical tastes get, I will always come back to bands like Rancid.

"Here it is, Here I am, Turn it up FUCKING LOUD!!!"

what more do you need?

Imogen Heap – Hide and Seek Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is pretty clearly about someone finding out that they have been broken up with, either by returning to or waking up in an empty home.

"Where are we?
What the hell is going on?"
- The Initial Shock

"The dust has only
Just begun to fall"
- Suggests how recently this has happened.

"Crop circles in the carpet"
- as a previous poster stated, this refers to the leftover depressions in the carpet after furniture has been moved. Or REmoved, in this case.

"Spin me 'round again
And rub my eyes
This can't be happening"
- The Dumpee in disbelief & Denial about the whole thing

"Hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines
All those years
They were here first"
- 'Hide' = How the Dumper has "hidden"
- 'Seek' = them searching around the empty home looking for what's left, both literally and psychologically.
- 'All those years, they were here first' = I feel this is the dumpee feeling like the other person had no right to do this to them b/c some of the things they took were "there" first (possibly the 'trains and sewing machines', but certainly their history).

"Oily marks appear on walls
Where pleasure moments hung before"
- Again, the leftovers of pictures that used to hang on the wall that have been removed.

"The takeover
The sweeping insensitivity"
- Two phrases the dumpee uses to describe what's happened. I particularly like 'the sweeping insensitivity'. It just refers to how quickly and w/out remorse the dumper executed the breakup.

"Mm what d'ya say?
That you only meant well, well, of course you did
This, it's all for the best, of course it is
That it's just what we need, you decided this
What did you say?"
- Im assuming at this point, the dumped has spoken to her ex about this whole thing and these are the ex's explanations, or excuses, as it were. I also like how the tone of the song changes a little here. Now, rather than being helpless and feeling like a victim, the dumped is now angry, and even a little sarcastic (rightfully so)

"Speak no feeling, no, I don't believe you
You don't care a bit "
- Done w/all the excuses, the dumped now has fully come to grips w/the situation and can begin healing. Or, "seeking" resolution...

My Thoughts, anyway.. Feel free to comment.
