| Aphex Twin – Avril 14th Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I think liger411 hit the nail on the head with the date. That is the day that France declared war on Austria (Marie Antoinette's home country, whom she was married to a French dauphin to create a peace treaty with), and this begin the entire French revolution and cemented the fall of Marie Antoinette and her husband, King Louis. The common population of France blamed her and the king for their state of poverty and desperation, which had become so great that they felt they had to start a revolution. About a year later, she was beheaded. Assuming that Aphex Twin did indeed write this song for the Marie Antoinette soundtrack (as I assume the instrumentation is a nod to), I think this explains the title. | |
| The Knife – Lasagna Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Katatonia is right on both counts: The song is Lasagna, not Lasagne. And, more importantly, it's "Charlotta, making lasagna with me above the clouds"... There's no Mia/bulimia.. This is about her friend Charlotta who died (apparently by suicide) and she is reflecting on memories (making lasagna with me) and her death. |

| The Smiths – Bigmouth Strikes Again Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I always thought of the first verse as a reference to the English playwright, Joe Orton, who was actually bludgeoned to death in his bed by his lover. Orton was gay and wrote very open, shocking plays in a time when homosexuality was still illegal. Allegedly, he told a friend of his affair with another man and plan to leave his jealous lover just days before his murder... Could someone who tipped off his lover be the "bigmouth"? I doubt the reference goes this far, but I like to think that the first lines are a nod to him. Incidentally, Joe Orton was portrayed by Gary Oldman in the 1987 biographical drama "Prick Up Your Ears". His jealous lover was played by Alfred Molina. |

| Joni Mitchell – Cold Blue Steel And Sweet Fire Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| She wrote this song for her friend James Taylor after his bout with heroin addiction (His song Fire and Rain is was written for a friend he met there). I'm sure during the time it was written Joni had a lot of friends and collaborators who were into heroin. That was the drug of the time. I love her descriptions in this song.. they are so ugly and harsh, and yet the song is so beautiful. Cold blue steel is a needle and sweet fire is heroin. | |
