| Andrew Bird – Orpheo Looks Back Lyrics

I got excited when I saw just the name of this song because I knew the story of Orpheus and Eurydice and made the connection... In the Greek myth the enchanting musician Orpheus falls in love with Eurydice, but their happiness is cut short when Eurydice is lured to her death into a viper pit. Orpheus uses his musical talent to gain access to the underworld and makes a deal with Hades and Persephone. Eurydice is allowed to accompany him back to the above world, on the condition that Orpheus trust that she is behind him, and not turn to look at her until they have both returned to the world above. At the last second Orpheus loses faith that his love is behind him, and fatefully looks back causing her to vanish and be taken back as a soul of the underworld. |

When they performed this song in concert in Knoxville, Tennessee a while back I remember them describing a bunch of jibberish about a mother bear and her cub and then concluding that this song was about the great American acid trip. Then I remember floating towards the ceiling with joy as they played it. no I wasn't on anything.... it's just that great of a song |

| Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood Lyrics

I think it is alot about the war, but more generally how people are always going to have something to fear. the whole thing about big foot being captured and then "now there are other ways to die, oh why oh why" the lyrics hint that that's why they send the "young blood", to fight off just another object in their neverending list of things to fear |

I kind of get the feeling that this song may be about a friend accepting homosexuality. The lines "a man makes a man a man, is that the way to kiss a friend" and "all you fear are her thighs" stick out to me but in a way that I don't think Alec himself is gay |

It actually seems like a more obvious meaning than most CYHSY lyrics. I think it's a song about Alec's personal experience of moving to the south and having hard time. In Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth there's the lyrics "far far away from West Virginia, I will try for New York City" I like to think West Virginia kinda plagued the guy |
